Bought a M96 9.3x57 looking for info on bolt shroud mods etc

Hey ya’ll!

I just bought a Mauser 96 in 9.3x57, it has some sort of side safety.

I’d like to slick up the bolt shroud, I can grind weld and modify stuff, but curious if anyone has info and pics on what is usually done? I read something about using CG80 parts, but I’d like to do as much fab as I’m able to.

Also planning to shorten to 19” keep the front site and relocate, amd build a stock out of some maple burl I have and stain a darker colour.

Wouldn’t mind modifying the bolt handle something a bit more like the modern steyr hunting rifles.

Considering a drop mag too.

If anyone has info or links to doing some of this work to look over I’d appreciate it!

If the bore is good I’d leave it as is as you would have to cut flatten and recrown the muzzle for little change other then velocity.

Those sweed sporter stocks are definitely all over the place and I’d change out most of them.

As for bolt mods I wouldn’t know where to begin.

Side swing safeties are available for 96 Mausers. Either with or without a new shroud. Trigger mounted safeties are as well, and sporter bolt shrouds. Brownells used to sell all of these. - dan

22" would be my preference for barrel length in that caliber

I was thinking 19”, why would you go with 22”?
