Well just bought sks number 3 today.....that makes 2 russians and one norc.

Anyway I bought it for 100.00 from a guy at work...good deal??? there is a reason why I only paid 100 bucks for it as it was in poor shape but I think it is salvageable.

I have been working on it tonight for about 2 hours and am stopping to drink beer as it has been being a ##### but it is well on its way...

My question is, now keep in mind I have taken care of my other two sks rifles and haven't needed to ask but the bore is rusty in this gun....what would be the best way to clean it up??

I have soaked it very well with CLP and am going to let it sit, basically saturated in it overnight.....

To add, the gun was bought in the spring I was told and it fired about 100 rds....corrosive ammo. The gun was pulled through with some kind of oil I was also told and never used again.

Hope so...the outside of this one wasn't bad at all......a few dings and scrapes on the paint...just want to get it gtg on the in side...it may have pitting but it can be my shooter and my other russian that is in good shape will stay that way. Too bad they are both 51 Tulas...would have liked to have two different years etc...oh well.

On yours if you can get it completely stripped to bare metal it can be re-blued or a parkerized job would be nice on it.

yes, i will have to get it to bare metal but your suggestion is too expensive for a $200 gun so i will try cold blue.

yeah....parkerizing would be pricey but it would look nice on a sks though....I reblued an old No1...turned out good. getting all the paint off an sks will be a challange.
 
You can't go wrong for $100 (but it wasn't too long ago that Marstar had new Noroncos for $149!). Even if the bore turns out real bad, you've got at least $100 worth of parts there.

I've seen many an ugly bore over the years and all could be improved, and a few that looked shot at first, with work did turn out to be good shooters. Try the traditional methods, and if it still looks ugly, you have nothing to lose by upping the ante and using steel wool wrapped around a brush. Never do this on a good bore, but if it's dark and pitted and you've tried everything else and are about to give up, it could help. Even then, it might shoot ok. Lots to try before it goes to the parts bin.
 
Yes....100 is good...it is a Russian.

I am going to try and clean it up after work today...it has been sitting clp since last night. I will pull it through with a brush then with swabs....

If it needs more out will come the blue/rust remover...carefully. I have read about using this stuff in the bore to remove rust and I just so happen to have some from a LeeEnfield project.....just got to be careful not to get it on the outside.

I have heard that giving it a good clean but not perfect...then firing it afew times and then pulling through the barrel when it is hot/warm will help...

I'll post what happens to it later after I try...even try to get a pic of the bore before/after.
 
This thread is prety much dead now but....

The sks is useable for sure, no pitting......the CLP soak worked ok, loosened the hunks of crap in there. I pulled the gun through with a brush, then patches and then used blue/rust remover. This got all the rust/discoloration out and then I used a cleaner/degreeser to clean that out, oiled again with clp, pulled through and got clean oily patches...and now am storing it with a light coat of oil in the bore until I shoot it.

For those who care the blue/rust remover worked the best.
 
It is believable that only 100 rounds have been shot through it. Corrosive ammo causes rust really quickly and if it sat without a good cleaning/no solvent, rust can occur in short periods of time. Just because it has rust does not mean that a lot of rounds where shot. Use a bore brightener as well as a copper brush, then run solvent patches (my fav is hopes 9) until the patches come out clean.
 
I will take it to the range when i get some ammo....I live in the boonies and getting 7.62x39 is tough out here as is anything else even slightly out of the ordinary. I am going to the city soon so I'll pick some up...going to get a crate probably...so I don't run into the ammo avaiability problem again but I want to buy some non corrosive as well...just curious on how that stuff will shoot.

Just in case anyone was wondering I am not in that much of a hurry to mail order any....the gun is fine for now..I stopped the corrosion process so a range report will have to wait for now.
 
was the gas rod ok?

I had a similar situation to you and the gas rod was rusted tight, so I could not get any semi action out of it. It was a few weeks of soaking and a light tap to loosen it out.

The gas system was ok...just needed a srcub but it turned out good.
