After years of non-restricted shooting and shooting friends restricted handguns, I took the plunge and upgraded to an RPAL. My RPAL is in the mail according to the CFC. So off to P and D and bought a SR1911 (just need my licence to complete the registration). Since the handgun purchase I bought a few spare magazines, a progressive press, powder and handgun primers.

Of course the shopping isn't done. I would like some type of magazine easy loader, holster and mag holder. What is everyone using?

Congrats. I have an SR1911 and quite enjoy it. What type of reloading rig did you purchase? I think you're smart to start with a progressive as a single stage will get left behind (although good to learn on). Certainly with 45ACP, reloading is a must. I can load 45 using jacketed or plated projectiles for $10-$11 / box of 50. I use the Uplula mag loader - I estimate it cuts my mag loading time by about 60%. At the range I can fling 150 rounds downrange in the same time I was shooting 50 without the loader. I'm partial to quality leather for holsters and mag carriers. Enjoy the Ruger.

To answer your question Dallasm: Press is the Lee Pro 1000. Dillion and RCBS fans just bite your lips...lol. I added their charge bar and bullet feeder accessories. With about an hour set up and fine tuning the factory pre-installed dies it has cranked out 20 practice rounds without issue. Time will tell when 500 or more get run through (I'll post a review when the time comes). I have used my Lee anniversary kit (pre breechlock) for my rifle rounds for a number of years but I knew right off I wasn't just making 50 here or 100 there.

Dallasm, you mentioned your cost per box. I'm figuring on 5 cents for primer and just under 2 cents for powder. The bullet type (and cost) is what I haven't committed to yet. What bullets are you using? Their price? Quantity in box? Other members chime in as well. I would like to see 20 cents per loaded round or less....if possible. Been thinking of ordering 1000 rounds of Norinco from Canada Ammo for break in and brass.

Got one the other week as well

for holster i like my bladetech that i use for a glock 17, so i might go with that for 1911 as well. brownells has some quad mag pouches as well, seems like a good idea with 7-8rnd mags.

I just got my mag order from numrich, mecgear mags and some no-name 7 rounders gonna have to try them out this weekend.

To M77 and dallasm, now you need to take the Black Badge Course and start using you new Rugers in IPSC. We need more Classic Division shooters in Alberta!

For 45ACP, I frequently use Berry's plated projectiles usually from Custom Reloading in BC (site vendor) and I've also bought from Jo-Brook in Brandon (also CGN vendor) when he has his shipping special. The cost of the Berry's varies depending on the projectile you choose. I use 185gr, 200gr or 230 gr. I also occasionaly use BDX 230 Gr FMJ projectiles if I can find them locally at Calgary Shooting Centre or Pro-Line.

My last batch broke out as follows:

- 2000 Berry's 185 Gr HBRN to my door $256.20 (all-in) or $0.128 / round*.
- 2000 Fed 150 (lg pistol) primers from Calgary Shooting Centre (when available) or WSS for $34.99 * 2 + GST = $73.48 or $0.037 / round
- 5.7 Gr Hodgdon HP-38 x 2000 = 1.63 lbs @ $23.17 / lb (all-in bulk cost from Higginson Powders) or $0.0189 / round
- Brass I assume ~20 firings brass life with 45ACP so I charge each loading 1/20 the original cost of the brass, so for me with 45 ACP brass its about $0.005 / round
- Total cost (incl. tax) is right around $0.19 / round or $9.50 / box of 50, $190 / 1000

Also these are an absolute pleasure to shoot.

* Note: this is the cheapest batch of 45ACP I've loaded (due to shipping special on projectiles from Jo-Brook). Normally I see my costs closer to $11/box with projectiles worth around $0.15/each or so.

Of course I don't charge each load for my time (I enjoy reloading almost as much as shooting) or for the investment in (dillon) reloading equipment (which has long been paid for). I do wish we had a Berry's distributor locally so that I could save shipping costs ($25-$30 per 1000 or $0.025 - $0.03 per round)

As for 1000 rounds of Norinco for break-in and brass, since you've got the time to reload while you wait for your PAL upgrade, I'd encourage you to buy 1K range brass on the EE ($80-$100 and shipping), order 1K 45 projectiles from Brad at Custom Reloading and load them yourself. The quality (assuming your care and competence) will be much higher and you will save yourself some money as well. Norinco brass is OK for reloading, but I find the primer pockets can be a little snug on the first couple of reloads compared to Win, Fed, Rem, PMC or other. Still not as bad as S&B.

I was just going to suggest this but didn't get around to replying to this thread until now. If you have time to kill, you might as well spend it building a supply of food for your new baby to eat.

I would also suggest Henry at Budget Shooter Supply (site sponsor) as his prices have been quite reasonable as well.

Well the ATT and LTATT took the longest 22 hours of my life. Darn these gifts we buy for ourselves.

Shot a total of 200 rounds today. Not one issue. 7, 10, and 15 yard targets, and one mandatory zombie dog (10 yds)..3 mags, 24 rounds, 18 scored. Ammunition used was Remington UMC 230 grain, 250 rd value pack. I am very happy with my SR1911. For me, an improvement would be high vis sights (or at least the front sight). The factory white dots are too dull for me in lower light.

i would check with henry for sure, his shipping prices are second to none, incredibly cheap compared to many others. I buy all my primers and powder from him
