Bought an m14.ca style muzzle brake. Apparently I have to cut (or gunsmith) cut the barrel to 18.5" and thread it? I kinda like having the original length barrel though. Just wondering what my options are. I'm a little confused as what to do.

The original flashiders on 22 in barrels have splines inside them that line up on the barrel . Springfield armory sells one that fits .

Top rifle is 18.5 factory shorty with springifield armory brake ( it will fit your rifle ) ,
2nd one is a Dominion arms Socom 18 with a threaded reversible flashider ,
3rd is a 22 inch barrel cut down and rethreaded to 1/2 x 28 TPI , Ellwoods did it for $75 I think.

looks like you answered your own question. to keep your barrel length and front sight you need a brake that uses the castle nut. there are adapters that that will accept 5/8 x24 brakes. chalkrivers suggestion of the springfield brake is probably your best option. the cheapest is shoot as is, return the m14.ca brake.

Just to confirm, the Springfield Armory unit will fit a Norc? Even the 22in version?

any brake or flash hider designed and sold for the M1A or M14 , such as springfield armory inc, smith enterprise, troy and a few others , will fit the M305 with factory muzzle detail of the 18" thru 22" barrels. be warned, avoid units with bayonet lug for the short barrels.
in short, if the unit you are looking at buying needs a castlenut to keep it on the barrel...... you can be assured, it will fit your rifle , re-using the norinco castlenut.
"some" M1A/M14 muzzle devices are DC or Direct Connect, these are designed to thread onto the M1A/M14 type muzzle threads and "some" fit just fine on the Chinese threads as well.
IIRC , Yomomma's version is one of the latter, a DC version but for Chinese threads.

Yes, custom made by TinyTim on here

I think Dlask Is cutting new threads over the metric ones. 1/2 28 And not removing any length. You still see the splines Though.

So are the threads on the Norc barrels metric? If they are ( the gas lock certainly is) then is it by re using the Norc castle nut how one can use an American muzzle device as long as it is the castle nut design??
