Hi all, got a sks 45 a while ago .
very happy so far .
haven't shot it yet though .
did a detailed strip down and full cleaning.
I have a question about the recoil spring .
when i bought the gun it is packed in cosmoline, came from a crate of 15 other sks's , and was hand picked by me personally....
it bieng the only one to have all matching serial #'s, and no refurbishing marks ...
the recoil spring was installed with the large spring guide inserted towards the muzzle .this is the way ive seen it in exploded views .
but almost every youtube video iv seen or instructional data on disassembly/assembly/cleaning iv seen shows the small coilly end inserted towards the front .
is there and reason for this...
 
The "squiggly" end goes in the bolt carrier. It will work either way but if it's installed backwards I've been told that the spring could pile on itself when the bolt cycles damaging the spring. Just flip the spring around and your good to go:D What year of manufacture? Tula {star} or Izzy {triangle}? and oh yea I almost forgot

There are some handleing marks here and there.
but it definatley has not been shot that much if at all .because the bore and rifleing are imacuate.
the bolt is neer perfect and it no were at all on any moving parts....
The most use i can see this rifle seeing is possibly a gaurd using it at a local armory or somthing simmilar.
Because of the handeling marks alone .the condition of the inards are condition not used.

its clearly got alot of cosmoline on it still..
the butt plate and the reciever cover looks like its brown in the pick .
its just the flash reflecting off the cosmoline .
what a pain that crap is .....
I had it up to my elbows after looking at all 15 guns .
 
Shoot it! Exactly because it is unfired, you should shoot it and enjoy it. I have an identical one, but mine is properly pinned (one of the first ones sold by Ellwood Epps). I find this original shellac color the most attractive of them all.

I later bought a 55-56 refurb Lam. but ended up selling it and keeping this one.
 
oh just shoot it, a "collectors grade" is worth what, less than 500 bucks? and call me crazy but how collectible is something that was cranked out by the millions?

Of the tens of thousands brought in, very few are non refurbs, and most of those are bubba'd irreversibly or abused to the point of ruin. In a few years that rifle will be very collectible if maintained. Nobody thought the Enfield supply would ever dry up either.

If we could ship to the US, the OP could get $800 plus for that sucka in a heartbeat.

This doesn't look scrubbed and re-stamped. It's extemely rare to see the arsenal stamp rubbed off and re applied. This is usually a trick used on the serial number. Plus, it would have never passed inspection with the bluing off like that.

My guess would be something to do with the crate they were packed into for storage. Potentially rubbed off from 50 years of friction within some crate in Russia.

Interesting though, I've sen this a few times now.
 
I probably wont shoot it ..
the thought of handing it down to my son after im gone. it may be close to 100 years old by then , and i think that would be pretty cool ...
I will most definatly get another one, and it will be a collector grade .
I will look them both over and decide witch one to shoot ...
if i cant find another collector, then ill just get a refurb for now.
they are so cheap i dont care if i have to buy 3 more of them ...to get one for shooting...
 
the different colour bluing, if its cold blued,is probably were it rested for the bluing to take effect .
It definately aint sanded down .
its probabley for sitting in create for so long ,cosmoline may have stained the rest of the gun or changed the chemical cariacteristics of the blue were it had contact and not here in this position were it would have been in contact against a rack.
I dont know .. but i too have seen this before to and in fact it is very common in the pics iv seen at this angle .....
 
Yeah it seems as though the middle third of the cover has one less layer of bluing to it. It doesnt look rubbed but more like something was covering it while the rest of it was being blued. SVT1940, heat seems like a likely culprit as well. Black Sunshine, I personally would fire the rifle but like my '54 Tula take it out less often and take very good care of it. Its a milsurp to me, the same as my Garand, Enfield and Mosin. Limited use, zero abuse and lots of love!
