OK so I've been shooting since I was a teenager but lost interest and only shot a few times since....

Fast forward to now & I after going through the jumps and hoops of the PAL system (got my restricted as well) I finally purchased the first firearm I've ever owned myself... I bought a Mossberg 500 combo 18.5 & 28" barrels

I haven't shot it yet but my first impression was wow this is way lighter that I expected & as expected from reviews I read, I wasn't impressed with the stock or forearm so I went to DS tactical and bought a Hogue over molded combo.

I put the stock on and was impressed with how it feels compared to the cheepy one, but when I went to put the forearm on I discovered that because the one with the combo does not have an "action tube" I can't put the Hogue on.

I've been looking around the web for one and they seem to be out of stock on most sites, but I have bid on one on ebay so crossing my fingers.

Anyway other than that it seems well built and I can't wait to shoot it.

I told my wife, who is also a firearms enthusiast that we'll go out on her days off next week and do some shooting, she got all excited and cycled the 500 a few times and had a little gleam in her eye :D

I bought 50 rounds of target loads, 10 rounds of slugs & 15 rounds of 00 buckshot

Can't wait to get out there!!!

feels great to own my first firearm!

If you unscrewed the magazine tube to get the plug out, make sure you screw it on super tight again and maybe use some blue loc-tite. They tend to loosen themselves after a while which causes the infamous 'dropped shell' when you cycle the action cause the rim misses the shell catch.

The gun will loosen up and be slick in no time.

Didn't have to unscrew it, I just took the barrel off and tipped the gun upside down and shook and out she came... I put it away just incase I go duck hunting one day, I believe that's the reason the dowel is in there in the first place, because you're limited to 3 shells when hunting water fowl.

That is correct, the plug is there for waterfowl.

You will have a blast with that thing. I just got my first shotgun as well and I am loving it. So far I've tried skeet and sporting clays. So much fun!

That's what we plan to do, some clays... I saw Canadian tire has them 135 case for 18.99 seems like a good price ?

Do you know how well the hand throwers work?

I think that is about the average price. You might save a $1 or $2 buying them at a sporting goods store. I have one of those hand throwers and it works decently enough.

I've actually been shooting the clays at a local gun club. You should check if there are any clubs in your area that allow walk on clays.

My wife and I might try a club at some point, we plan on joining one for handguns when we take that plunge. But there is lots of bush here and we want to do some hiking so we'll likely start in the woods and find a clearing

Then the hand thrower will be nice and light. It should work fine for that.

Some clubs don't make you join to shoot clays, might be a good option when you want to shoot but don't want to hike in.

In the USA, clays go for about $15, just as a reference point. Clay thrower is about $9-12.

You can also throw one with your hand to get doubles. Or stack them like exhibition shooters and throw them up and try to shoot them when they separate.

I want to try that, I just need to find a nice open space to do it in.

I want you to beat Patrick Flanigan's record of 7 hand thrown clays with a Mossberg 500. No pressure... :p

I have a 500 in the safe - it's totally my go-to turkey gun. You'll have fun with that.
