My 7 year old loves my Mk II but its way too heavy for him, so he's been shooting a Cub I bought my oldest daughter years ago. with his 8th birthday coming up in a couple weeks I figured it was time for him to have his own. I found this heavy barrel Rascal and picked it up yesterday. Basically a mini version of mine (at least in appearance). Cabelas had a Firefield bipod on for 50 bucks so I threw that in the cart as well.

Just need to find a user friendly optic for it and he should be good to go. I have a Leupold VX1 I used on a CZ 452 I might try out on it. May also try customizing the stock for him a bit, the factory one is pretty goofy imo. Final setup of the scope will probably also have to wait to see how everything fits him. We'll see once he shoulders it and go from there. Thought I'd share, open to suggestions.

The MK II is literally exactly as I bought it, a package deal that came with the Bushnell 3-9 on it. I added the crappy paint though....

Nice! I really like it should be a hoot. Those Rascal stocks are really built with kids in mind. I really like the target version Savage has out now. Maybe worth while to see if you can get that stock!

Please tell us more about what hood scoop is on. I love it! cut for more power!

That's my 55 Chev, my shop is a disaster and it was the only place I could set the rifles for a picture haha.

The Rascal has a threaded barrel, would be nice if........

With the big barrel its pretty muzzle-heavy but I picked it because knowing my boy, he'd want it to look like dad's. Going shopping for some rings this morning, then maybe try it out and run a few rounds through it. I'd like to get it as ready to shoot as I can so when he opens it up on his birthday we can just take it out and not waste time.

Maybe not the right way to put it. I have limited time when I'm at home so just want to make the most of it. On the other hand, maybe he would like a hand in "putting it together". On the other other hand, I'd really like to play with it in the meantime!

I put the Leupold on with some rings I had, but it might be a little too high.

I like that new version of the Rascal, and that’s a snazzy scope for it too! Likely sitting too high though. Let us know how she shoots!

At 7 years old I hope you taught him to shoot with the iron sights first before just putting him behind a scope??

I as well think that giving him the bare bones gun with all the extras not attached would be a great father son learning experience as to how to install all the extras with him (after he has proven he can use the iron sights WELL), to each there own though!

That scope looks WAY to high! Like you stated yourself you should be setting the gun up with him present so it fits right not worrying about YOU going out playing with the thing first................

Anyways just good to see you getting the youngins involved maybe just slow it down a bit and show him the proper way........

EDIT......... Just went back and noticed this is a heavy barrelled version without irons..............I personally would take the time to let him learn on another gun with irons first but hey that is just my OP

Good luck to the young lad!

He's been shooting a Savage Cub with a peep sight for almost 2 years, as well as various other rifles along the way (Henry youth lever, Savage 24C, etc). I have several rimfires with both iron sights and glass, he is familiar with all of them. Most are simply too big or too heavy for him to handle comfortably. I agree the scope is probably mounted too high (previous post), just used some rings I happened to have yesterday to mess around with it.

Putting it together with him on his birthday isn't a bad idea, but setting it up with a baseline beforehand isn't either. A new set of rings is on the list, and maybe a rail so there's some flexibility in scope placement.

That's great to hear he had his start on the irons! A big thumbs up dad for doing it the right way! He will have his own gun now and I'm sure that is going to put him over the top and he will be shooting for many years to come! I would still suggest setting it up with him but I see where you are coming from wanting it ready for him to shoot. I personally just think he would take more away from the expereance setting up his new rig with his dad. Ether way good job getting another one hooked!

I would love to hear the feedback on this once he has used it a bit. I have been looking at buying one for my son and putting it away for him. He is 1 now so has a ways to go before he would be ready for it. I am obviously way ahead of myself on this but think they look like a neat little gun for him to start out on.

Will do, he won't get it until October but I'll update after we take it out. I just saw there is an XP model, I wish I had seen that one before buying. The stock looks a lot nicer, I may have to look for one of them to put on it.

My brother put a red dot scope on his old .22 for his grandkids to use. He said they really liked using the scope, younger ones found it much easier than the open sights.

Not sure that it would fit without different bases though. I put a picatinny rail on my daughters 20 ga Mossberg 500 when she started deer hunting - gives a lot more versatility in being able to mount different styles of optics.

TSC has Tasco red dots on 40 or 50% off this week in the flyer - if they have any left in stock.

I was in my local Canadian Tire today after work and noticed they had one in stock. Generally their prices suck......but today was different. Got one for $179. Put it away in my cabinet until he is big enough to use it.

So his birthday was today and I finally got to give it to him. Mind blown. I took the advice and stripped off the goodies so we could put it together (together). I also picked up a set of lower rings that might fit him better. I never did shoot it, but it was hard to restrain myself.

His liberal/anti/progressive grandmother pretty much blew a gasket when he started opening his gifts, I started him with a box full of the add-ons and then handed him the basic rifle in a soft-sided case that was the perfect length (thanks to a local shop). Win for everyone that matters. Tomorrow we have a big day: go to the shop and assemble it, ride dirt bikes while we can before the snow flies. Saturday we are driving to my parents' so he can shoot.

Little bonus, I dragged the missus to Cabelas today and she picked a little Buck folder off the shelf to give him. She is as anti-everything as her mother, so this was a huge leap for mankind.

Review with pics to follow.

I remember the first rifle I bought my son. He was two and doing everything with his left hand. I scoured the planet for a left handed bolt. Took some doing as they were not common 20 years ago. Finally found one and bought it . About three years later he starts using his right hand . So now I am really confused and out I go again . I find a cz scout and buy that. He was given the scout when he was almost six and after he had learned to read a little bit. Turns out he shoots right and golfs left??!!. He still has the scout and a few more besides. Those were great days teaching my kids to shoot. I miss them.
