I was in Bashaw Sports picking up some supplies, and decided to see what they had in lightweight 20 gauge o/u shotguns. It turns out that they had a slightly used Citori 525 Field model in 28 gauge that could pass for a new gun.I had really been looking for a 20gauge,and the gun had 26" barrels, and I usually prefer Citoris with 28s,but with such a light receiver, the gun swung and balanced perfectly for me.The price was about $500 less than for a new gun,and it included five extended Briley choke tubes($250),and a fitted Browning hard case($200),so I couldn't pass up the deal.
The only negative with the 28gauge, appears to be the limited selection of ammunition, and higher prices for target loads, but since the gun will be primarily a hunting gun,and there are suitable loads available, this shouldn't been a huge concern for me.

Welcome to the 28 gauge but don't be surprised if find it addictive. Low recoil and hits as well as the 20 gauge. There isn't the same range of ammo available but for upland hunting, skeet and sporting clays there isn't much the 28 can't do.

The secret to shooting it often is to reload. My used single stage MEC paid for itself after I'd loaded two flats of shells. :)

Sounds like you found a good deal (rare, eh ;)) When we were kids and graduated to our single shot .410's, one friend had a bolt action 28ga. That was the only 28ga I ever shot or saw anyone carry but it threw better patterns than the .410's for sure.

In the old pre-steel days I hunted with a Rem 870 28g and was very suprised at how well it knocked down birds out to 30 yards. it is a great gauge

Just wondering Bigbore if you remember the make and model of that 28 gauge bolt action?

You made a wise choice ,stubblejumper.Nothing better in the uplands than a nice light weight 28 gauge in my opinion.

I have handled that exact model. It is a sweet heart! I regret that I have not paid closer attention to Bashaw Sports web page. Lucky you:D

Hey that is a great deal! Congrats to you. Wish I could find deals like that one! I have been shooting the 28 almost exclusively now for 3 years. In fact today, I shot a nice wood duck hen at beyond 30 yards with an improved cylinder choke and a 3/4 ounce load of tungsten matrix #5s. She went down like a dish rag and did not require any follow shots.

Here is my bespoken, only one in the world 28:

I use Winchester AA Extralight on birds over my Dhrathar, Oban. It knocks them out like being hit with a 2x4!

it is the only 30 inch 28 gauge round body ever produced by the Worlds largest African gun maker! I am having a 32 Bespoken Parcours de Chasse gun made. also a one off! It is a prototype that we are working on. It will probably have Muller ceramic/teflon chokes and bored to the Beretta Optima Bore dimensions! Of course the gun is made to the owners dimensions and with the owners choice of engraving.

Regards,
Henry;)

BTW: Dante in Montréal will have some African game guns in the big stuff some time next year. It takes about 5 to 6 months to produce such a premium firearm. The 28 will be on display on days that I don't shoot it.

I am all for Defensive Pistol even if I was a founder of IPSC Quebec. I think that IPSC has drifted form its fundementals!

Henry;)
