Hey everyone,

I just bought an 870 Tactical from another member through the EE and had a few questions. I've used the search function already but can't find every answer so I apologize for any reposts.

Side Saddle - mesa or tac-star?

I'd like to add the wings to the rear ghost ring as it just has the ring. Is it possible to add them or do I need to buy an all new rear sight?

Thanks everyone, looking forward to being part of the shotgun community on CGN. I've been around in the M14 section but couldn't pass up a sweet deal on the 870, pretty pumped to have it.

Congrats on your 870 acquisition.

If your new gun has the Wilson TrackLock rear sight, you don't need wings for it. You're not going to break it if that's your worry. It's built like a tank. You can't add wings anyway. You'll need a different sight for that.

The sidesaddle, these days the Mesa one is the cats ass. Must be really useful to see the serial number with one installed. There's a price that goes with it though. In my opinion, yoo expensive for what it is and does.

TacStar is fine. I use one and never had a reason to change. Then again, I don't really like side saddles, but do keep one loaded on my HD folder.

I have busted more than one sidesaddle. I can't tell the difference between the two, then again I am not trying to impress anyone. Go with the Tac-Star....

There may be issues with the tiny little screws backing out on the TacStar.

LocTite solves that for good.

Thanks for the responses everyone. The reason i posted my question about the side saddle is that I had heard that one or the other may not grip the shells as tightly as the other and that the Tac-Star may not screw in as firmly as the Mesa though Easy's suggestion to loc-tite the hell out of it would take care of that issue.

FWIW, its just a plain 870 Tactical. The rear sights are the XS Ghost Rings. I'm also wondering if I will need to trim the fore end to accept the 6 round saddle.

Thanks for all the responses and the warm welcome to the Shotgun section of CGN. :dancingbanana:

The XS ghost ring is pretty resilient to bumps and bruises. Besides, I've found it is the front sight that can benefit the most from wings rather than the rear, as it is the front sight that tends to get beat up. But that too depends on the type of use the gun sees. I do quite a bit of crawling through the rocks with mine, and the muzzle and front sight take a beating. A couple of wraps of electrical tape protects the muzzle, but my front sight blade is bent.

I know it's a little late, but your forend shouldn't have to be trimmed, 6 shot side saddle should fit fine.

Cheers

mesa side saddle if not on a budget.that being said yes locktight either one.one thing with mesa is they dont recommend leaving shells in the side saddle for extended periods it dents the rubber tube they use to retain the shells.which is replacable.i have both and guess which one collects dust the tac star.cant put hub caps on a ferrari right?

it would be cake to add wings to this if you had your heart set on it. drill 2 holes, tap each side, and install a steel plate on either side with two machine screws+loctite.

1- Mesa Tactical.
2- It is posible to add the "wings", but it's no necessary. I wouldn't do it.

Don't cut the forend... First try it and if it doesn't work with the shotshell carrier keep it in a drawer a couple of months until you can get a Surefire forend :) ... They fit perfectly with the mesa 6 shot saddle on the 870P and are top quality.

If it is an 870 Tactical, it should come with a short Police model fore-end instead of say an Express synthetic long fore-end.

The short will work with either one.
