Bowhunting question

I got my first, and so far, only, deer with a bow from what could only generously be called a "Ground Blind".

Mule buck, about 12 feet away, while I was sitting very still, on an upturned bucket, with about a dozen broken-off poplar branches stuck into the ground in front of me.

Proof that one should never underestimate luck as a factor in hunting.

The guy hopped the fence to cross the train tracks, and he was pretty accustomed to using that route. There was actually a groove worn in the ballast where the deer had been using the trail across.

Surprised that he could not hear my heart beating from where he stopped.

But I digress.

I prefer ground blinds. I have used brush piles, logging slash, and similar, but not used the portable tent type.
Seen a fair enough amount of game.

Cheers

You're definately giving up an advantage by hunting from a ground blind, because a tree stand gives you a bit more time to see and prepare. But that's why its called huntin and not killin! Hunting with a bow from a ground blind is a lot more "in your face" style hunt, and I applaud anyone who can do it. Personally I'll stick to trees until I'm too old to climb.

I have reently used a groud blind- longe rit out- more use to it the deer get- But have also made my own blinds- just used waht was around me and have killed deer from the ground that way also.

it would sure add to the challange. I hunt on the ground with the crossbow but I dont have to draw the string back to shoot. I guess from a good blind it covers a lot of your movement but I still prefer a treestand.

My only buck with the bow came from a ground blind. About a 20 yard shot in terrible wind! My setup is basically just a piece of came netting, about 4'x12' long. I've attached it to 3 tent poles, which I then drive into the ground and anchor down with some rope (if it's windy). If I have time, I'll grab some tree branches and shove them into the ground in front of the blind, just to add some realism and break up the outline a bit more.

I've had many deer come by my blind within shooting range without getting spooked. Personally, I'd never use one of the commercial made blinds. I know they work, but to me I'd never spend the money on one. I'd rather carry around my lightweight and compact netting. But everyone has their own opinion.

Just keep the noise and movement minimal, and always stay downwind of the deer, then have fun!

spot and stalk or still hunt here. Of course I havent been successful LOL.

Called a 2 point whitey in one day. Busted me at 5 yrds at half draw.
Got within 70 yards of a 160 class muley.. but he was chasin a doe and I couldnt get far enough ahead of him to set up a shot
Got within 50 yards of a few other mulies.. but same thing.. didnt have enough time to set up a shot.

I have only gone out 5-6 times this season though.. Im sure if i put a dedicated few days of hunting in I could bag a deer with a spot and stalk or just still hunting a trail. It is quite the rush to be sneakin up on a deer like that though! Got the adrenaline pumping big time!

I have that same blind but have never used it. I lent it out to a buddy who was Elk hunting and he really like it.
