box mag fed M1 Garands on Forgotten Weapons

Interestingly, the first designs by John Garand (T1919, and T1920) had detachable 20 or 30 round magazines. The 8 round enbloc “pinger” is the most distinctive feature of the final M1, and is often thought of as a shortcoming, but this was actually listed as a requirement. The huge Garand book by Bruce Canfield has a document from Feb 1921 that states “the rifle may be fed from clips. The magazine may be detachable, but this is not considered desirable.” And “should not exceed 10 rounds.”

Very interesting!! I did read in Hatcher's Notebook about the attempts to develop a select-fire box-fed Garand in WWII.

The basic M14 really isn't anything more than a box-fed, detachable magazine Garand that feeds .308 instead of 30-06.

I think from the wording there is no limit on ammo capacity in the Garand either. If the mags are only available for the grand then hi cap rifles are a posibility. I'll have to talk to the lawyer wife when she comes back form her trip because this seems like a sweet loophole

I thought the law specified only the eight round en bloc clip but if not and you're right that would be cool. I wonder if you could feed .308 out of the mags too?

Nice but
Set your stopwatch because it won't take long for any "loop hole" to be closed once the fear mongerers become aware. If high capacity mags scare them bad enough they could likely prohibit all M1 Garands.

Instead of guessing...

(2) Paragraph (1)(a) does not include any cartridge magazine that

(a) was originally designed or manufactured for use in a firearm that

(i) is chambered for, or designed to use, rimfire cartridges,

(ii) is a rifle of the type commonly known as the “Lee Enfield” rifle, where the magazine is capable of containing not more than 10 cartridges of the type for which the magazine was originally designed, or

(iii) is commonly known as the U.S. Rifle M1 (Garand) including the Beretta M1 Garand rifle, the Breda M1 Garand rifle and the Springfield Armoury M1 Garand rifle;

The Enfield speaks of limits. The Garand clause does not. It would have to be specifically designed for the Garand. Not modified from a magazine designed for some other semi auto.
