Which feeds better-a box or tube magazine in a bolt action shotgun?I have a 20 guage that feeds very smoothly-but my 12 doesn't[which could be the result of low brass shells, the high brass feeds easier.]These are strictly utilitarian truck guns-not for wingshooting or skeet where a nice pump would be my choice but you can pick up a bolt action for about the same price as a single with the advantage of a couple of shots instead of just one

IMO they wouldnt be the greatest choice.
by cheap bolt-action shotgun i assume you are referring to the 2 3/4" 12ga Mossberg bolt actions?
theyve been discontinued for ages now, and getting parts for them would be very difficult. also fixed choke, limited to 2 3/4", very old design, and slower action than a pump.

if you want a dirt cheap but modern, reliable shotgun for your trunk look for either a new Maverick 88 (around $200 brand new) - or a used Mossberg 500 (again ~$200). in this case the aluminum receiver is actually an advantage because it will not rust.

or pick up the Baikal single shot on the EE for $80 shipped and cut it down.

yes,the Maverick certainly fills the bill[my boy has one] and theres nothing wrong with a break open single-probably you can reload pretty quickly.However-for a deer hunting , a bolt action shotgun may not be a bad choice.
Yes there's a tube magazine 16 guage bolt action shotgun for sale on EE

i think that you may be overestimating the old Mossberg or Stevens bolt action shotguns. they will not give you better accuracy over a pump like the newer Savage slug guns (that are basically an oversized rifle adapted for the 12/20ga).
its just going to be a 2 3/4" smoothbore shotgun with a slower action than a pump, more potential problems and zero parts availability/aftermarket.

:runaway: and 16ga to boot... you could not find a less appealing combo (to me).
i assume you are referring to this?

look around a bit more - you can find something better suited to your needs.
hell i have seen 2 3/4" Wingmasters for ~$200.

I've got a nice old 20 guage bolt action which is just for the unsportsmanlike task of potting grouse on logging roads ,but I agree a modern pump like the MAVERICK would be the better choice. The reason for the question is I didn't even know tube magazines were available in bolt actions[and given the availabilty of shells would choose either a 20 or a 12 anyway]

or if you dont need 3" capability look for an inexpensive old Wingmaster. quality is much better than what you get these days, they are dirt cheap because everyone seems to think you need 3 1/2" to kill a rabbit these days, and they can be converted to 3" in the future if you decide you want to.
