Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of piecing together a target rifle off of a 700 action and barrel. I plan on predominantly using it from a prone position with some bench use as well. With that in mind and a sub $500 stock budget I've settled on a Boyd pro varmint stock. I'd like a cheek riser but am unsure if it is worth the cost in this case. With how weak the dollar is right now, the addition of an adjustable comb is an extra $90 after taxes. It also only rises 1/2" which isn't much compared to other stocks. For those of you who have a Boyd stock with a riser, are you satisfied with it? Thanks in advance for the input.

I have one, and I say yes. It beats having to glue or screw a cheek riser on, 'cause that looks like sh!t.

The riser, combined with the right ring height, make a huge difference in ergonomics, and in turn your ability to hold still, and maintain sight pic after recoil.

It only raises 1/2"? That's disappointing because I was thinking of the same thing. Maybe I can contact them and get them to cut it out for me and I'll install different hardware

I'm going off of their website:

https://www.boydsgunstocks.com/custom-options/adjustable-comb

Going off of pictures I've seen of the adjustable comb on different rifles, 1/2" does seem shorter than it looks, maybe that's only a recent change.

I have that stock and was going from memory when I asked, but you're right and I confirmed it on my gun, a Savage FCP-K in 223. That said, the comb is already as high as it can be and still remove the bolt and the additional 1/2" is more than enough - on my gun. Boyds knows a few things about stocks and could have made more adjustment, so unless you have a sky-high scope mount, I think you'll be ok. If you think you'll need more, I suppose you'll need to look elsewhere.

Thanks for the input everyone. I've decided on a custom order which includes an adjustable comb and will place an order through either Boyd directly or one of their Canadian suppliers once I find out which is cheaper.

He gave me a quote of $325 plus tax for a pro varmint with applejack laminate, limbsaver recoil pad and an adjustable comb. That's $40-50 cheaper than buying directly from Boyd.

Here's what I paid direct from Boyds last year (in US dollars). For some reason they didn't break out the additional cost of the laminate, nor the adjustable comb, they just wrapped it into the first line:

I really like the adjustable comb. Here it is on my 7mm Weatherby Mk V, with ARMS 22 Low mounts and an EGW 20MOA rail.

The scope is a Vortex HS 2.5-10x44.

I only needed about 1/4" of loft to really feel comfortable at this height and I think you could easily go up to a 50mm objective with this setup.
