Hey guys, Ive been slowly working on my Boyds stock for my M1 and have ran into an uncomfortable problem. The rear handguard band inletting seems to be too deep, as the band is loose around the handguard. Comparing the boyds piece to the old one I can see there is alot more material removed from the boyds handguard. I know the band isnt spread too far as it fits tightly on the barrel, then when I lock the trigger guard the band contacts the stock and pops out with the scariest sounding CRACK. I thought I had cracked something but it was just the band popping out. I removed some material from the stock below the handguard band but it still fits very poorly. The handguard is held down tightly but the band is offset in the inletting groove. Sorry about the pic, LG found the worst camera in the world and put it in my phone  The handguard band is locked in its grooves in the pic

If the slot is too deep, fill underneath it with some folded 3x5 file card material. You could make a bold correction and fill the slot with brown Acraglas bedding compound, then relieve it back to a proper fit.

Are you sure you have the long leg of the clip on the left side of the handgd as you look down the barrel?

When the stock is locked up the bottom of the rear handguard should not be in contact with the stock. You mention the clip popping out when the trigger guard is locked. You need to remove some wood from the bottom of the handguard to provide some clearance between it and the stock.

While you are fitting the rear handguard you should also dress some wood off the rear face of it so that there is some clearance between the back of the guard and the face of the receiver. About the width of a business card is good.

X2 I think you have the band on the wrong way. Look at the band when it is not on the guard and compare it to the slots on the barrel.

If it turns out it is on the right way and the guard is milled too deep then use some silicone caulking (clear) run a bead in the slot let it cure then install the band.

You might have the band on the wrong way around. They are not equal on both sides so try turning it around the other way.

Thanks guys, the clip was on the right way. It was the inletting and barrel channel combined. I cut some thin cardboard to fit under the band and that got it fitting snug. Then I had to remove a little material from inside the barrel channel on the oprod side and now shes fitting good with one exception. It seems as though the barrel channel could be deepened a little in the middle as I noticed the front of the handguard lifts up a little when the band is snapped in, I have to put the ferrule on first before putting the handguard on. Is this normal or should I remove some material so its not touching the barrel? And purple I read through your post on accurizing the M1, thanks for the great info. Very surprisingly the handguards fit the way you describe straight from boyds, as far as length goes. A business card fit is the way they came! But man, shes almost ready for oil and parkerizing!

The wood is quite thick in the commercial rear handguards and needs to be inletted on the bottom side for a good fit. I have a new Boyds guard which has not yet been fitted and it is a lot thicker than a GI guard. You should daub a thin coat of your wife/GF's red lipstick on the top of the thick part of the barrel to show where wood is contacting the barrel. Trial fit the guard with the metal clip removed and keep shaving down the wood as indicated by the lipstick.:bigHug: You don't want contact/rocking action between the front edge of the thick part of the barrel and the guard as this will exert stress on the barrel when the guard is inserted in the lower band.

The clip must be on rear handgd before it is installed. There are 2 options for installation. First, the lower band can be removed and re-installed after the guard is slid on from the front with the edges of the clip seated in the barrel grooves. Second (my preference as you are not dicking with the lower band if it is already fitting tightly), the rifle is rested on the bench with stock removed and the tenon at the front of the guard is inserted into the lower band. Make sure that you have fitted the tenon so that it fits easily into the lower band before proceeding. The guard is then swung down into contact with the barrel and the guard is snapped into place by pressing downwards with a thumb on the clip. Do not press down on the wood as this may crack the guard. It's a good idea to put a bit of grease on the inside edges of the clip to assist this.
