Boyd's stocks - stippling/checkering/scales and recoil pads

Im going to order a boyds stock shortly and am trying to figure out exactly what I want.

I have a few questions:

1) Looking for info on stippling/checkering/scales. Which did you pick and why? I know I want to get one of these but I can't decide which one.

2) How is the Boyds recoil pad? Are they any good or is $30 extra for a Limbsaver or Decelerator money well spent?

3) With regards to length of pull, when it says standard length is 13.75" that is with the recoil pad attached right?

Its a 270 so it doesn't kick like a mule or anything, but I am pretty small and my wife is tiny so every bit helps. With the cheap plastic stock the axis comes with it is not the nicest on recoil though that is for sure.
 
I like the limbsaver and the checkering or the stippling, had the limbsaver and stippling on a Ruger 375, have the
limbsaver and checkering on a Brno. Have not tried the scaling

for me it's going to be a pepper or camo laminate rem 700 long action
I've kinda settled on a pachmyer decelerator , oakleaf checkering and a moose head engraving
gonna have to toss a coin to decide which laminate i'm gonna go for
 
Did you get the LOP you ordered, or did you get the LOP you ordered plus 1/2" for the difference in recoil pad thicknesses?

Boyd's measures LOP to the back of whatever recoil pad you order... so LOP "includes" the recoil pad. I don't care for the stipling, the scales look good on an old school classic rifle in walnut, not so much laminate IMO... checkering is probably the best look and feel on laminate... but I vastly prefer the Boyd's satin finish without any grip pattern.

Also... the standard honeycomb Boyd's pad does a pretty good job with recoil... I am not a Limbsaver fan, they work but are too "floppy and sloppy" aesthetically speaking for my taste... I have order a number of stocks with the Decelerator for heavier recoiling rifles and was happy with them (@ + $30).... but for the most part, I syick with the Boyd's factory pad.
 
What about additional costs?
Do we have to pay tax on these stocks? Do they get held up in customs? Is there any fees to be paid at the post office when they arrive?
I priced a laminate pepper heritage with all the trimmings and it came to $284 canadian shipping and all,..but I don't want to get to much higher than that.
 
I bought the Prairie hunter with the checkering and the 1/2" Boyd's pad. I have one for my 270 and one for my. 358 Norma. I bought the Royal Jacaranda and the Sky Blue. I much prefer the Royal Jacaranda. My next would be the Coyote Laminate. I ended up having to pay an additional $90 upon receipt of the stocks which I was disappointed with but only had to pay it once. Now they're mine!

Everything over $30 from the US is subject to tax & handling fee ($10)... but in my experience, more than half come through without have taxes levied... something like 55/45... the fees will come on a customs form attached to the parcel and are payable when you pick up the parcel at the P.O.
 
I have a Boyd's Prairie Hunter on my Vanguard in 270 with the factory recoil pad, and there is no problem with recoil... mind you, the rifle is pushing 10 pounds all up.

I'm considering the stock for a 300 Win Mag Tikka T3, which I suspect is going to be a different kettle of fish.

I've got limbsavers on a couple of rifles, and I like what they do, but they are *so* sticky and rubbery. Couldn't agree with you more, there. Based on your recommendation, I'll try the Pachmayer this time. Cheers.

The Brno 600 Prairie Hunter with a Limbsaver I ordered standard LOP 13 3/4" received 14 3/8", the Husqvarna Featherweight Thumbhole with a limbsaver ordered standard LOP received 14", on my stocks received in March it would appear the Limbsaver is adding some length.

The ones I ordered with Pachmyr pads were finished right at 13 3/4" which is what I requested... the standard stocks are 13 3/4" with the Boyd's waffle pads...

Interesting, I never even thought to check until I read this thread, I know they have had a warning on their sites about how busy they are, maybe a little attention to detail is missing.
