So...if I wanted a BP hunting rifle-didn't want to spend a lot of bucks-just looking for a functional, accurate, simple and well made rifle-what would you pick?

being a newbie to these also...i bought one from the EE...section:D ...have yet to try it out:( ..
the one i bought was a traditions lightning...it a modern version of a muzzle loader..the good thing with the EE section here..if the gun that you buy ,and are not happy with it..resell it and try another model or style of gun..
you have to start somewere...so i would suggest you put an ad in the EE section and see whats out there..
just have a few catalogs to cross check on prices of used guns compared to new ones..just to give you an idea what they are worth..
good luck and happy shooting
cheers
Don

If money is no object, I would recommend TC Encore. I've used mine for 3 or 4 years now and am completly satisfied, plus you can add barrels of different cals.

Here's a shot of me with my Bull Moose. One shot 18 yards, in the neck right behind the ear.

Here's me and my WT buck, 104 yards, front shot into the base of the throat, shredding the lungs into cottage cheese.

Both kills were made with my Encore, 250 SST sabot and 3 777 pellets. I also got an elk in Sep but did'nt take any photos.

To some extent you are asking a question like what is the best colour for a girl's hair. I would suggest going to your local gun club and checking with people in the black powder section; not what do they think is best but ask to try the different types of guns they have. Hopefully it will allow you to form some sort of opinion of what style of gun appeals to you.
I think buying a cheap gun for hunting is foolish; you want a dependable gun and many of the cheap ones will give you endless headaches
Finally there is the division between traditional guns and inlines with sabots and sub caliber jacketed slugs. If you want to shoot for the romanticism of an older style of gun then buy a traditionl style. If you want to have a gimmick to take advantage of a special season then I guess buy an inline with a scope sight.

Jebus Gilly, you sure do look like your Bro' Huntsman! Did a double take there....thought Jaimie changed his handle on here again! He and I have gunplumbed together before.....:)

any muzzleloader is or, original style or inline, depending on what you plan to hunt, of a size 45 cal minimum fer deer size game or bigger......50 cal is a good all round size......
then up to you as to percussion / flinter ect.
nuff said. i lean toward the old time designs my self.

If it were me,I'd stick with American made m.l.'s.ie;NEF,T/C,Lyman,Knight etc.
Percussion or in-line? The unfortunate thing is,the less expensive m.l.'s are produced in Spain, hell Norinco even has one.Not to slam Spain though,I do own a beauty Pedersolli percussion!
Good luck.
