Gentlemen: Does anyone know how to open a shotgun choke with a brake hone? Several people have told me it is easy. I tend to think there is a little more to it than that. Any specific size for say 12 gauge FULL to MODIFIED?

any help would be great.

Darryl

sure it would be easy, but how much to take out?
what about ridges you may end up with, you could
end up with oval shape.
That is why reamers are used.

It takes a lot of honing to remove a couple of thou...

If you are thinking of altering for steel shot here is some information.

SHOTGUN BARREL ALTERATIONS FOR STEEL SHOT

Forcing Cone Alteration:

Factory shotgun barrels usually have a fairly short and abrupt forcing cone. The forcing cone is the tapered area just ahead of the chamber where the shell is contained. Altering the forcing cone, so it is one and one half or two inches in length, reduces recoil and improves the pattern density. Trap shooters and skeet shooters have been doing this for many years. It is a good benefit to the steel shot user as well.

Choke Alteration:
Choke designation from the tightest to the most open are:
Extra Full, Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Skeet II, Improved Cylinder, Skeet I, and Cylinder Bore.

Steel shot does not require the constriction that lead shot needs, to produce good patterns. In fact too much constriction, causes poor, erratic patterns
, and in some cases, permanently damages the barrel. I have seen barrels bulged at the choke, I have seen barrels where the choke split right open, from using steel shot.

For steel shot, with thin barrels, chokes should be altered to at least Skeet II.
Often, over & under, and side-by-side shotguns, are best altered to Skeet I and Skeet II chokes. Heavier barrels can be left at Modified choke but may see an improvement in the pattern if opened slightly.

To alter the choke and the forcing cone is usually $80 per barrel for non chrome lined barrels only.

Good info. I have a Jap Browning Magnum Auto 5 in FULL fixed choke. I was thinking having it opened to about IMP MOD for steel. I shoot no steel larger than #2. Good idea?

cheers Darryl

I would tend to go to at least a light mod. if not skeet II. The Browning auto 5's where traditionally made with softer steel and impr. mod. is still quite tight. I'm finding most shooters find mod. to still be a little to tight for steel shot and are having me open up the choke a bit more. I've seen a few auto 5's where steel was shot through a full choke and there was ring bulbing at the end of the barrel.
