Brakes causing scope damage?

Didn't know where to ask this question but I was talking to a friend the other day and he mentioned that rifles with muzzle brakes are hard on scopes!

Is this correct, do muzzle brakes cause damage to scopes?

I believe it is a myth. I have never seen it happen and I have had experience with scoped rifles with brakes since 1968....

I have a Nikko Stirling scope (by no means a high end brand) mounted on a 375 H&H magnum rifle thats been Magna-ported as my main moose hunting rifle. Before the hunt, I take the rifle up to sight it in. It has never been more the one or two clicks out in the 12 years it's been on the rifle, no matter how many shots I put through it.

I also know a couple of guys, one with a 308 target rifle with a muzzle break on it, that he fires a LOT, and none of them have ever experienced any scope problems.

I suspect this is just another of those gun shooters myths that you hear about from time to time.

The myth probably comes from the scopes on magnum, spring powered airguns. The springers are hard on scopes because of the back/forth action of the recoil spring.

A muzzle brake does not cause the same type of drastic action, it just slows down the rearward velocity of the recoiling gun a bit. Your shoulder slows the recoiling gun down even more than a muzzle brake.

I got brakes on 223's and 308's I never heard of this....

My Tac Rifle has a AK74 Brake on it and I fired lots of rounds.

So if I put a brake on a 7 lb scoped 300 ultra mag, I'm not going to skrew up my Leupy VXIII B&C. Might be rather unpleasnt to shoot without a brake.......but I still might try

I suggest you have it professionally mounted with quality mounts. I would prefer the Dual Dovetail bases and either Leupold rings lapped or Burris Signature rings.

Its got dual dovetails right now, but was considering Talleys as a lightweight upgrade, what do you figure with a big boomer like this, will the talleys hold

I think he was referring to muzzle blast and shockwave rather than actual recoil that was affecting the scopes

Brakes usually direct out to the sides, so, it only messes up the scopes of the guy on the next bench

I suppose if one didn't understand high school physics you might be led to believe that....in theory a braked rifle should be easier on a scope
