Hi all, this is my first post and wondering if anyone in the community has any advise for me.

About 2 years ago I bought my Dad a brand new Berretta 686 Silver Pigeon over under for his birthday, I got it at Basspro here in Calgary think i paid about $2800.00. My brother borrowed it to go duck hunting, and maybe on the 4th shell to ever run though the gun about mid way the barrel exploded. He claims the barrel was clear, but there was snow on the ground so I bet he accidentally put it down and it was a simple breach due to a bore obstruction.

I took it to Shooters edge to see if it was covered under warranty, or if i could order a new Barrell. The rep said its not and you cant fit a new barrel because each one is set to the receiver. (He was kinda a jerk. My dad was heart broken, and the sales rep kept showing him over unders worth $20k plus saying these are good guns but his was cheap and not that good)

Anyway.. I since replaced it for him with a new 686..... Id appreciate if anyone had any insight if his gun should have been covered under warranty? as well as.... Can i fit a new barrel or somehow get that 686 to run again?....Third, if not does it have any value, maybe to a gun smith for parts? and if so any idea on how much?

Appreciate your wisdom.... Thanks

Contact Stoeger/Beretta Canada and buy a new set of barrels; this sales rep knows nothing. Not sure if you will get the warranty but just give it a try.

Thanks! I just emailed them. I should have earlier, but after talking to shooters edge he made it seem like my dad was out of luck. Is it possible the barrel was defective? My dads like 75 years old, has been using the same cheap Remington 12g pump all his life and was kinda getting mad at them.

Try them and see
But I’m thinking there’s a possibility your brother could be the cause of this. Just saying

Clear quality pictures of the barrel would be helpful. It's usually an obstruction that blows a barrel. Sometime that can be determined by pictures...

If the action goes back to Beretta the factory can fit new barrels.

But I doubt warranty has anything to do with this...

Ill take some pics in the morning, is it possible to tell if its a defect or obstruction? also any idea what a new OU barrel on a 686 might run me?

The location of the burst is a clue. Typically a barrel will burst a few inches back of the obstruction. If the muzzle was plugged with snow, I would expect to see the last 6-8" of the barrel gone. There might also be signs of a ring bulge. If the burst was "midway", as you say, then there was probably some other cause.

Well - I'd be surprised if you got a replacement barrel under warranty. Shotgun barrels run at relatively low pressure, a barrel failure is typically caused by obstructions (separated hull, snow, etc.) or using shells longer than the gun is chambered for, or over-powered reloads. BTW - What shell length is the gun chambered for, and what shells was your brother using?
A new fitted barrel would probably run you close to 1500$... You didnt mention if the fore-end was damaged. If you want to sell the gun as is, you could probably get 3-400$ as a parts gun, assuming your brother didnt mangle the wood as well.

Italian guns are proofed with high power tests loads before they leave the factory so it's unlikely it was a manufacturer's defect. There are anyone of a number of other reasons to have caused the burst. New barrels can be ordered but they will probably need to be fitted to the gun by a gunsmith.

Here's a listing of barrels sold by Beretta.

Sales rep sounds like a knob. Call beretta. A new barrel set may need some fitting, but a good gunsmith should be able to do this. Or have beretta do it.

And yes, an obstruction will cause this. If it was steel shot through a full choke it could cause a bulge near the muzzle. A mid-barrel split like that sounds like an obstruction at the muzzle (snow like you said).

oh no doubt... I cant say one way or other. Would snow in a barrel cause a explosion like that?

I had a o/u Spanish 12 ga come in, same thing, goose / snow, he dipped the barrels in the snow , not realizing it, fired the top barrel, ended up with a ring about at 14 in ,he noticed it and looked and seen snow in bottom barrel . Bottom barrel was O.K. still
It was too short to cut down, it did not blow it up. Sold it to another fellow that needed stock and spare parts, cheap. He may have made a coach gun .
I have not had one but seen case of some one sticking the end of a 12 ga fishing, it blew up, a youtuber redneck type.

Beretta service is the worst in the industry in Canada. New barrels can be bought. I've seen several 686 guns swap barrels perfectly at the gun club so fitting should be minimal and can be gun by a good gunsmith
