Bought a cz 858 this morning. After removing all the grease from the rifle I shined a light down the barrel. To my surprise it is pitted quite badly. It is the non-restricted version without chrome lining. Is this normal? I will speak to the shop I bought it from in the morning. Other than the crappie surprise in the barrel it is a nice piece. Thanks for your input.

Ummm; I'm going to say that..no..a badly pitted barrel is not "normal" or good for that matter. If it's badly pitted it will affect accuracy and therefore is not a "nice piece". IMHO I'd rather a rifle that looks like sh1t and shoots straight...my .02 cents

I agree plinker 777. I was just wondering if anybody else has had this problem with a new rifle of this make and model. Saying is this normal was not the best choice of words on my part. All the other "rust problems" I have been able to find on the web for this particular rifle purchased new have been in the reciever area. They were also vz 58s sold in the US (I think). I have bought way to many new and used firearms and airguns over the years and none have looked like this.
Thanks again

The first 858 I bought "new" from the store was definitely used. I am not sure if some of these rifles are made from surplus parts or refurbished but some have been used. I took it back to the store after it was also continually jamming and they were good enough to swap it for another one with which I have had no problems.

My advice is to try to exchange it at the store.

Rather not say the store. Vancouver BC area. Spent a good hour running patches, brushes and some good solvent through the bore. All shiny except for the many pitted spots. I will be at the store I purchaced it from as soon as the doors open.

All, that is, every single semi-auto VZ 58-type rifle, is made of new, used, and NOS parts.

In the case of the non-res 858, the only part you can be sure is new manufacture is the barrel.

Slow at typing. Barrel was loaded up pretty heavily with grease. Action just oiled heavily. Wiped of easy.

Weird, haven't seen that before.

It was sold to you as "brand new?" Are there any obvious signs of previous use like wear in the receiver?

Almost sounds like someone was trying to hide the pitting.

Everything looks new. Doesn`t look like it has been fired other than from the factory. Has no obvios handling or wear marks.

From what I've read Stevo is 100% correct. I bought mine new (from Reliable here in Vancouver ) and I have been really impressed - it is accurate and has proven worth every penny. I am starting case #3 of ammo with no problems at all so I am :D

If it's Wanstalls they'll take good care of you.

x1 When i got my cz858 from Williams Arms, 2 years ago, rifle was well oiled and 100% rust free. Never heard of cosmo used to protect cz, they are shipped from factory only well oiled.
