I picked up a 2010 gun catalog a few weeks ago, and while flipping through it I noted Springfield armory was advertising brand new M-1 Garand, (note: M-1 GARAND not M1A Springfield) for $1500 U.S. Available in .308 and 30-06.
As many of you know the Garand is the only center fire non belt fed rifle to be allowed 8 shots in Canada, not to mention one of the higher caliber semi autos ever mass produced, in a stump splitting 30-06.
The remanufacturing of these rifles seems like a fairytale come true. does anyone in Canada import these rifles, or will we not see them for some years, if at all? This is a must have rifle in any case as far as I'm concerned, I hope someone is getting on this.

Also note: The Springfield Armories main web site says nothing of these rifles. Here’s the only link I’ve been able to find:

They have been making them for years....generally they have a bad reputation for reliability.

This is bull..I owned a NEW springfield Garand and it was perfect. All new parts and build by people who know Garand.

Garand forums do not bear this out..another internet bull born on a keyboard...

I will buy another one in an hearth beat.

Odd, I just called Springfield Customer Service and they are saying they have not produced Garands since 2008 and she knew of no plans to produce them. Is Customer Service not in the loop, or something else up? Going to send an e-mail to Sales.

They are well made and function fine. They have a cast receiver rather than the forged receiver in any of the original Springfield, Winchester, International Harvester, Harrington & Richardson, Beretta, and Breda Garands. Many firearms are made with cast receivers nowadays to economise on production costs. You would be further ahead to put your money into an original Garand. .308 conversions are easy to do and work well.

From the horses mouth;

"Dear BC,

Unfortunately, the M1 Garand rifle was discontinued as of January 1st, 2008.

Thank you for your interest in Springfield !

Yep, it was Sep 12/98 when I bought 5 Garands for $165ea (2 Win, 3 SA)and Sep 19/98 when I went back and bought 4 SELECT Garands for $175ea (1Win, 3 SA). SELECT meant the # on the receiver matched the # on the stock. Barrels were SA and a mix from 42 - 52 plus some VARs as these were all Danish. Barrels were all brilliant. I've sold some but still have a brilliant 44SA, 52 WIN and one of ea with VAR barrels. Those were the days!!

Just found another receipt which showed I bought 4 Garands the week before for $500 ($125ea!!!) and 7 bayonets for $175. I assume he raised the price when I went back. I had a nice Visa bill the next month.

The Garand is the only semi-auto centre fire that can legally hold 8 rounds, while the SAFN 49 is the only centre fire to legally hold 10. I love mine, in 30-06, will never give it up. It also out performed the Garand in the hands of the Belgians in Korea.
