So with new rifles there is a break in procedure that consists of fire one shot clean, fire one shot clean, ect for about 20 rounds. I know lots of people don’t “believe” in this procedure but that another topic for another thread. Assuming you are a supporter of break in periods in general what is the correct way to break in a new pistol? The same as a rifle? I just got my first pistol, (I’m really excited to shoot it!) it’s a Glock 17.

Thanks in advance

I wiped the bronze-ish crap out of my Glock 17, oiled it as per instructions, and shot about 1200 rounds through it before cleaning it.

Just shoot it.

Never knew there was a break in procedure. The only thing I have done is clean and oil a gun according to instructions before using it the first time.

Follow Manual. Those guys usually know what there talking about. Clean, oil, go shooting. Repeat steps everytime. Congrads on the purchase & have fun.:D

Barrel break in is a myth. Same policy for handguns as long guns. Clean it before you shoot it the first time. Then clean after you're done. Repeat as necessary.

With a Glock, I'm with everyone else - clean it, shoot it (but I'd recommend doing this as often as possible) If it was a 1911, I'd say 200 rounds full power 230 gr. ball, then whatever else you want to feed it. If you think of handguns like pets - feed often, clean often - they'll last virtually forever.

G17 Chamber junk.

My G17 has a habit of crudding up the chamber. That's not really bad since a tight-ish chamber is sort of okay, and a sloppy chamber is tough on brass.
But I have noticed that my G17 chamber junks up pretty fast.
As an aside, was at the range yesterday and put 20 9mm rounds on the target from 22yards.
4 were 8's. The rest were 9's, 10''s and X's. Bullet was a DRG 135g RNLead with Aliants PROMO powder.:50cal:

For rifles (US Marine Corps Snipers & Police Tactical Snipers) it's 2 shots - clean etc for the first 20 rounds on a new rifle. For a semi-auto give it a field strip cleaning first and then go have a few hundred rounds of fun. Then do your usual field strip cleaning. I wouldn't bother with any detailed strip clean for the first few thousand rounds.
