My Friend Just Got Is new Savage 10FP in .308 cal.. We were shooting yesterday and Bolt Was really hard to open and when I mean really hard It was Enough to kick it with his fist.. Is it normal and will become smoother with use or it seem to be defective...

Any of you guys ever had that issue with that gun

all thanks in advance

i have a 10 flp wich i bought in the spring i finally got out to shoot it 3 weeks ago and i had a few rounds that didnt want to eject as well it was a very hot day and being new the heat of the barell and all could have caused the brass to stick , im hopeing it dosnt do it once it gets broke in

Whether it's "normal" or not for the Savage I can't say, but that's crap. No bolt should be that tough to open.

Does it happen with an empty chamber or just after firing loaded ammo?

Is it hard to lift without a shell in the chamber or an unfired cartridge? Just getting at that there is also the cocking process as you lift the bolt handle after having dropped the firing pin.

I hope you are not using surplus military ammo as there are differences in the case dimensions if the chamber dimension are at minium then you may have a problem it can also exist if using comercial ammunition poor QC of late

i have a savage 10 as well and i had issues with Norma Oryx 180 gr ammo once...very hard to lift and i actually had a primer blow out..so i'm thinking it was maybe a hot load for the gun? and when i reload hotter ammo it becomes harder to lift but that's normal for most rifles so i'm told...maybe your ammo isn't compatible with your gun..if you don't reload try 168 or 175 gr gold medal match from federal mine loves that.

I only have second hand knowledge but a number of Savage guys here are having big problems with them in all calibers, just as you note. If you are using factory ammunition, take it back for repairs.

I've got 2 10 FP (one an LE which I bought 2nd hand) and a new one..

The LE was about 200 rounds when I got it.. It's probably tighter with factory ammo then the new gun... They both have a pronounced (more feel then anything) clunk as the bolt is "seated, locked, closed" whatever the term is)... However neither of them need more then a firm push to release the bolt... The new one needed a few cycles before it was totally smooth but she cycles like glass now..

any chance the scope base screws protrude down to far and snag the bolt?
i've heard of it on rem's, but i've never seen the inside of a savage action before.

If the cocking of the bolt is acceptable after dry firing on an empty chamber, then the issue is a mismatch of ammo to rifle.

Some Savage/Stevens will come with pretty stiff bolt open out of the box but that will wear in or you can hone the cocking surface on the bolt body if in a hurry.

Ensure that a quality grease is put on the cocking piece/cocking ramp on the back of the bolt and on the back of the lugs. Running the bolt will smooth things out.

If the issue is after firing some type of ammo, then inspect to ensure there are no scratches or burrs on the ejected case. That might indicate a chamber that has rough spots which will lock the case making it very hard to eject. That is a warranty problem for sure.

Otherwise, look at the primer and if flat and there are shiney spots on the case head (by the lettering), load is way too hot for that rifle. Could be too much headspace as well but will show up if there is no resistance during chambering.

Sorry guys, I missed a detail It's harder to close when there is a roud in the chamber... Hard to close on and Hard to lift when fired.... we tried Winchester rounds and Federal rounds both did it

it just the ammo your using........i had the exact problem when i used Norinco surplus 308 rounds in my 700

I have a Savage 12 and when I got it the bolt seemed a little stiff to open. I read somewhere that this is common with Savages and that it would ease with use. It indeed has loosened and I don't find a problem with it now...

I never had to really strain to get it open though, just snugg is all.

Sounds like VERY tight headspace (as in none). If it cycles fine when empty, but has resistance with a virgin case, then that headspace is way too tight.
