Hi guys,
Just got a new takedown 10/22 in a magpul backpacker and took it to the range.
First 6 shots I hear it ring steel at 100m and then last 4 of the clip I don't. Found it weird so I took barrel apart and looked down the barrel and found it strange that I couldn't see through the other end. I figured that I somehow piled 4shots into each other in the tube and got all worried. As time went on I kept staring through barrel in disbelief and slowly saw a glimmer of light until finally after a couple minutes I could see the other end perfectly again.
I was gobsmacked that it'd bend that much because its only a 16" barrel. I haven't seen anyone else complain about this problem. I understand its not a bull barrel but I figured it'd be able to handle at least 10 shots fairly consecutively without issue.

Anyone got ideas, is this a ruger warranty issue or just the nature of the beast?
Thanks

Not likely warped. Sounds like you looked down a smoky barrel. I have to agree with 357, it's most likely an ammunition issue. Try shooting on paper at 25 yards for group. 100 meters with a stock 22 isn't the best benchmark for accuracy.

What ammo and how fast were you shooting? Next time try running a C-rod down the bore ? That'll tell you what's up. Can't imagine 16" warping enuf to 'block light'.

This ^ for sure. No way that you produced any kind of visible "warping" at all, let alone enough to obscure the view down the barrel.

Did you clean the barrel before shooting? New guns are usually shipped with some protective oil or even grease inside the bore; I personally wouldn't even consider shooting one until the barrel is thoroughly clean and dry.

I did clean the barrel before running the gun as I do all my rifles.

I've got one of these that is at least 10 years old, and geez, 10,000 rounds through it?
Even with the relatively thin barrel, I've never ever even once "warped" the barrel. I will attest that it definitely can creep when it heats up, but we're talking maybe 1" @ 50 kind of creep.
All that said, and with this rifle being "okay" with accuracy at 50, at 100, it's just not the rifle to be grouping very well anyway.
Try standard speed ammo. These work great with the peppy ammo, but I've found they are more accurate with slower stuff. I have a crate of CCI standard velocity that it pretty much all I feed through it these days. I used to swear by minimags, but I get better "groups" with the standard, and it still cycles (keep the action clean).

Also, just stay away from ammo in the bulk packs. Bumping around the bullets get loose over time and accuracy/velocity really can suffer (if plinking, doesn't matter). Years ago I stopped getting bulk packs of anything and my shooting improved. Now I only use rounds that come in hangers, like god intended.
