hi all and happy new year, anyway i have a browning pump already and realy love it, i was going to get a bakal O/U on here, but just the other day my dad came up to see me and for christmas he bought me a new in the box never fired winchester 1300 12 bore, not a O/U that i want but hey it was a real nice gift, i wont sell my BPS 12bore but can anyone tell me the quality of these winchester's? are they closer to say a rem 870 express or to a wingmaster or somewhere in the middle?

I have a 1300 and its a fantastic shotgun. My grand father had it before me and he got it in 1997 and its never caused me any problems. The speed pump thing is kinda cool and ive put a few thousand rounds down the tube with out a hitch. Lots of accessories around for them which is nice. Its a breeze to strip apart and clean.

Some hate them, some love them. Undeniably, SPEED PUMP is cool.

From an aftermarket standpoint, Win 1300 are not as popular as 870s however, the Winchester is still a great, light weight shotgun.

guido is correct it is much closer to the express than the wingmaster, but by keeping it clean and with enough tlc, you'll hand it down through your family. nice christmas gift congrats

My 1st gun was a Win 1200 (1988), great shotgun I've taken everything with this baby!! From whitetails to Canada/snow geese to grouse and rabbits.
I even did skeet for a couple years with it. It's all too funny when you score 25 three in a row beside buddy with pricey Berretta O/U lol.
IMO, these are good all round shotgun for the price , Nice gift on you!!

jcbruno, which model did you get? The 1200/1300 was the replacement for the gool old model 12. The only real complaint I have heard is that it was not a m-12, but then what is? My opinion is that it is better than present day wingmasters.

I dunno if I'd say the 1300 is better than the 870, more kind of equal in my books. I own a 1300. the biggest difference for me is the weight. I find the aluminum reciever of the 1300 makes the much more lively than the steel reciever of the 870. You can argue the stell vs. aluminum durability point but for me the extra weight of an 870 means that it feels very slow in swinging.

thanks fellas for you advise it sounds like the winchester might be slightly better then the rem870 but minutley thanks again

Not in a million years.

The 870 is bullet proof and there is a good reason your father was able to buy a new 1300 2+ years after Winchester closed it's factory.

I had one for almost three years, without question the least reliable firearm I've ever owned.

sorry i ment better then the 870 express. but i will argue that my browning pump is better then a wing master, and the winchester i got is the 1300

The finish and outward appearance of a 1300 isn't significantly nicer than a 870 express. The FN model isn't a 1300 copy, the 1300 is finito.

I just bought an 870 Express over a 1300 this xmas for my father. The 1300 had all sorts of machine marks, sanding marks on the stock and over all seemed quite poorly made, I don't know where it was made. I purchased an express 870 (laminate) that was very simple but well finished and clean. I had looked at express' in the past that didn't seem so great, I think that the quality comments from the past have had an impact at Remington.

In all fairness, I have a 2006 era Wingmaster that is great but does have some marks inside the receiver that I don't think should be there and the finish on the trigger group isn't even.

should check out gunweek.com , they have an article on the fn tactical pump shotgun

"The safety of the FN Herstal TPS is a cross-bolt which lies just in front of the trigger guard. It is quick enough in use, and one of the few departures from the AR15 format. The slide/bolt release will be familiar to anyone who has used the various Winchester pump-action shotguns. Learning the position of the release and its rapid manipulation is vital, as most combat shotguns are kept ready chamber empty, but against a cocked spring."

"The action of the TPS will be recognized by many as the proven Winchester 1300, with refinement."

"As of this writing, the TPS is the top combat shotgun in mass production in the United States, per my testing. There is simply nothing else in its league. Anyone wishing to own a top-quality defensive shotgun should take a hard look at this one. You will not be disappointed."

Seems to me that the FN is a copy of the 1300,interesting that they didn't use the famed 870 as a platform:rolleyes:

I was wrong, I went to the Winchester guns site last night to look at the new model 70's and low and behold there was the speed pump.

They wouldn't have used the 870 as the model because they own Winchester not Remington.

the new speed pumps are different. At this point i'm not sure how different but the receiver is different from the 1300's being produced up to 2006.

Most of the problems I had with mine were related to the rotating bolt popping off the rails, if it's a different reciever that's probably a good thing.
