So I purchased this rifle about 6 weeks ago, Have put a total of 150 rounds through it at most, the first box of 50, it failed to fire 6-7 rounds. next box of 50 I was able to zero in my scope, but it had about 10 failures to fire. And the last time I tried to take it out for some plinking, it only fired a total of about 3 shots out of 20 cartridges put through it. There is a visible indent on the rim of the misfired bullets, and I've used 3 different brands of ammo with similar results.

Anybody have any experience with this? I've cleaned the bolt/ chamber a couple times and it didn't seem to help.

Im hoping I wont have to send it away for warranty work (I really hope this would be under warranty!) as I've heard it will take a long time to get your rifle back!
 
Have you called Savage? What about the dealer you bought it from? I wouldn't be trying TOO hard to trouble-shoot a new rifle, I'd be on the phone to the dealer and Savage after 3 different brands of HMR ammo gave consistent (poor) results. I know there is a Savage Warranty shop a couple of hours from where I live here in S. Ontario, Grech Outdoors.
 
Ive got a hold of the dealer who said they would "call me back." Savage will be getting a call pretty soon I guess. Guess I was just hoping this was some common problem with an easy fixable solution that might be out there.

Whether it is, or isn't an easy DIY fix...a new gun shouldn't need fixing. Personally, I'll trouble-shoot an older...or used gun I buy but the moment I have a hunch a new gun is "off", it would be right back to the dealer. I'd go as far as to say that each day that goes by that you DON'T get a hold of Savage...it might make it harder to convince them it's a manufacturing default and not the result of something you did. Your rifle/your call.
 
Ive tried getting a hold of a couple canadian savage warranty shops with no success yet. They are all located on the opposite side of the country as well unfortunately. Anybody have any experience with any of the 4 savage shops listed on the savage website?

Post #2 in the thread. :) John Grech (Grech Outdoors) is a very knowledgeable guy, and I've dealt with him personally. I'd urge you to contact him, depending on what Savage tells you.

There is a visible indent on the rim of the misfired bullets


Get the dealer to install another firing pin in it. This part is stamped and is possibly a bit too long or has a burred edge in the projection that keeps it from hitting the chamber.

My hunting partner bought a new BTVS a few years ago, and had the same problem with misfires. We took it home, and I switched a firing pin out of another bolt for his, and it then worked perfectly. Upon comparison, and measurement, it was just a hair too long on that firing pin projection. A few minutes with a file took the burr off and smoothed up the edges, and it now works perfectly in his rifle.

However, since this is a NEW rifle, you should take it back to the Dealer and have him try this. DO NOT do it yourself, as it would probably void your warranty.

I have dealt with Alain Depot and was very pleased with his service.
It was nothing major just a muzzle brake that came from the factory improperly indexed.
He had it back to me in a weeks time.
 
Just an update. I happened to be swing by Grouse River outfitters in Kelowna on my vacation (where I purchased the rifle from). Brought the rifle in and explained my problem. They had another in stock, they handed me the brand new rifle and took my old one stating that they will deal with the warranty issues themselves. (And possibly took a loss trading a barely used firearm for a new one.) Can't ask for much better service than that. Ill definitely be making future purchases from them.
