Hello folks.

So, I recently recieved my Non-Restriced card in the mail, and bought myself a Cooey 22. Model 600.

A few questions...

Can anyone point me to a range in or around Brantford, ON that is relatively noob-friendly?

I know the vitals of gun saftey but am a wee bit apprehensive - this is my first firearm.

Also - I've been unable to find a reasonable answer to this in my course manual but - if I have a surplus of privately owned land, where I'm shooting at targets that are safe and a large mound of dirt behind them... is that okay?
 
You must first stop shooting on unsafe range ,you looking at serious criminal chrges,no matter how high the walls or berms might be and there is pal instructer in Brantford named Gerry Mills and his phone is 519 752 8459 and there is good shooting range around the corner from you, ask him for directons and very nice guy to deal with, will surely help you but stop unsafe shooting
 
Why is it so unsafe to shoot on private land. Sounds like he has common sense here. Instead of telling him to stop how about a few pointers on how to do it safely. You need to call your township for any local bylaws. High berms, I would try to avoid metal targets.

If you are on private land where there are no local restrictions on firearms discharge you may shoot to your heart's content. Make sure that your bullets do not leave the property and that you follow the basic safety rules. There is nothing inherently unsafe about shooting on private land.
 
Heh there youonlywish, I do a little bit of sighting in on the farm I hunt at around Brantford as well. Not too close to open season though. Anyways, if its a safe area to discharge a firearm then go ahead. But if your shooting anything larger than a .270 then you have to be able to prove that you are target shooting and not hunting because you cant hunt varmint with anything larger than a .270 around here. I personally don't shoot nothing larger than a .22 or a few shotgun loads to pattern my gun in around Turkey season though.

Anyways, the best place around Brantford to go is the Waterford Gun Club. Its about 20 mins SouthWest of Brantford on Hwy 24. They have a 200 yard outdoor range, skeet, and trap, and indoor handgun. I am not a member but I plan on joining. Not expensive either.
 
Just to be clear, I havn't shot ANYTHING yet.... I will be attending a range to learn the in's and out's of my new rifle in a controlled environment - but am looking for a closer alternative as a down-the-road option.

It's so nice of you that you asked before and better you stay close to some one who's involved in shooting and there's guy's phone in your area I believe he can guide you better. It never hurts to listen some fellows whose there to help, just be safe and stay around

Just go check out Waterford gun club, ask questions, and most good guys will be happy to answer. Everyone starts out somewere. Most guys, like to help out newcomers to sport.

Everyone likes to hear compliments about there awesome guns, so that always gets the ball rolling. You would'nt believe how many strangers guns I have fired by starting the conversation off by saying that.

24hrs and you can shoot anything and everything but buck shot, and even that has some exceptions.

I wasn't really impressed with HAHA in Ancaster...but this may not be a problem if you don't own restricteds.

I also wasn't impressed with Waterford because the range wasn't open enough.

Galt is too much $$$ and I believe their rifle section is closed anyways.

based on what I've heard about BRRC in burlington, I won't even consider it


For me, EESA is well worth the 1 hour drive. There is also Brant Rod and Revolver club, but I think that is a handgun only range (indoor)
 
Brant Rod & Revolver is hand gun and small bore, so you can shoot .22 rifles.

BRRC is 24hrs and you can shoot everything, whats not to like?
 
Since a previous post listed as far as St. Catharines, It would only be fair to mention Silverdale, just past Smithville. They are very friendly.

In fact, I live very close to HAHA, yet I shoot at Silverdale. :)
