Hi, I thought maybe this would be a good place to ask before the itch to start sanding grows on me.

I got a sporterized 1916 BSA SHTLE and when I bought it, it had no butt plate. I've slowly begun accumulating parts for it. At first I ordered the wrong butt plate for it (it was a steel plate for a No.4).

So I ordered a brass plate off eBay that looked correct. The screws match up, but the plate is around 10 - 15% smaller than the No.4 butt plate? The thing is, I am pretty sure this is a No.1 butt because it has the cut-out for the safety on the left and a filled in disc plate on the right.

Is the brass butt plate I ordered for an even older rifle like a Metford or something?

Might be for a bantam butt rifle - the shorter butt would probably mean smaller all-around dimensions on the plate, though I'm not sure. They may be interchangable between rifles.

I just ran into the same thing. I bought an un-issued no 4 wood set from the UK.The stock has a S stamped on top near the butt. Got a brass butt plate today and it`s way too small. About 3/16" wood showing at the bottom, About 3/32`on both sides also has smaller radius at the bottom corners and smaller radius on the tang that fits in over the top of butt. I hope I don#t have to cut the stock down to fit the butt plate.
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.
