Well in mine at least.

I've read people saying that federal doesn't feed and I can't say I've tried it. However, I baught a box of Ingman that fed without any ftf and upon recovery of one of the casings it is in reloadable condition. Certainly doesn't look like some of pics of federal I've seen. Only a faint scratch.

Also fired off about 10 winchester rounds that I had kicking around cause they wouldn't feed in my sks and they also went off without a hitch and cases appeared fine.

This is my experiance with my rifle so I can't speak for you or yours.

Cheers,

While I was firing commercial brass cased ammunition in a SKS and 858, the casings were never the problem, they chambered, fired, extracted and ejected just fine. The problem was the soft commercial primers they were using in that ammo which frequently caused slamfires (i.e. unwanted and dangerous automatic fire, caused by a powerful and brutal bolt movement (like most milsurps) and the use of sentitive primers). Most brands such as Winchester WB, Rem UMC and Fed AE had the same problem.

However, you can have some problems with brass casings, such as ripped off extractor rims due to brutal extraction, cracked cases due to generous military chambers.

The only non mil-spec ammunition I have used in my 858 is Federal Power-Shok. I have fired about 100 rounds of it through the rifle without any major problems. The only thing I have noticed is that you have to let the bolt slam the cartridge into the chamber when loading, you cannot ease it forward or else it will not close properly.
