Just got my 180b in the mail (thanks skinnadoor) and took it to the range. As I was packing up I noticed small marks on the side of the upper reciever and cocking handle. Is this normal? If it isn't what can I do to fix it? The ammo used was Rem/UMC hollowpoints, it that helps.

Many, many semi-automatics allow the brass case to hit the area around the ejection port as they exit. As such, brass dings like this are completely normal and not worth worrying about.

Throw it down a gravel road and you'll never notice it again.
Why in the name of all that is hot and covered with gravy would I do that?

Good to know that it's 'normal' enough. I guess that marks come off with a bit of scrubbing

Just to break it in. Then you won't worry about all the little scatches ;)

As mentioned... 100% normal (mine does it too).
Very nice photo by the way...

Could you please take a picture like this, then post it here for me to take :)
(I never took a before pic, and I'd like to have one to compare against)

Thanks in advance!

As said many semi do this. Have you ever taken a close look at the case deflector on an AR15? ;)

To combat the cosmetic blasphemy you can stick a piece of Velcro (or similar) to the area where the casings hit to prevent it from scratching the paint job.

Many rifles are shot in factory so it's quite normal. Even brand new $3000 SIG's have blemishes around the ejection port from being test fired. If you're worried about resale value cover it up with electrical tape or Velcro.

My AR-15 used to have that problem. Put a patch of hockey tape over the affected area. Next time I went shooting, no marks and the tape came off easy. Might work, might not, but it certainly saved the deflector from turning brass-colored.

Velcro has more padding and absorbs the shock better. Grip tape might work. I went with Velcro and after a few hundred rounds it looks indifferent.:)

You could put some aluminum foil tape on the effected area. $7 /roll at walmart. I have some on my fabarm to protect the receiver from the forend. Works like a charm, and it's pimp'n. :D

Sorry for the quality but my camera is not that great.
4 keys to a good gun pic: 1) No flash! 2) fixed camera position (Use the timer and no touchy. tripod works best, sitting the cam on a solid object works in a pinch) 3) Good lighting! Get a lot of light on the subject, makes up for no flash and shows a more natual shape/texture. 4) contrasting background!

Clean the brass marks with a barrel cleaning fluid that attacks copper like Sweet's or Accubore and a nylon pan scrubbing pad. You can use diluted ammonia, too.
Then dry and stick some temporary padding on that spot when going to the range.
PP.
