brass filings in around bolt and chamber

fwm is right on greasing the hammer nose where the bolt rides over the hammer during the cocking phase (rear ward travel)

Namsurvivor... every observation you made about those shavings is normal. I got lots of those after a high power match with my M1 Garand (20 years ago). I always carried an old toothbrush just to brush away any of those brass shavings.

I had a situation with an M700 Police... was not ejecting out of the reciever after successful chamber extraction. Upon closer examination at home, I depressed the built in ejector/spring / plunger assembly with a wooden dowel and out comes a large sliver of brass. D'oh... Lesson learned!!

Keep a combination tool handy....

Enjoy the Garand addiction.

you're misinterpeting the nomenclature- m14s means the norinco m14 model s, as in the chinese sporter, which is non-restricted- in the same way as m14k means kurz which is a short version- the real m14s=as in plural m14( made in the usa) are safe queens and have been since january of last year or earlier-to firther confuse the issue, the m14/m305 chinese has had different markings over the years - for instance my early version has no markings at all except for made in p .r.o.c. and possibly the norinco star on the port side- i can't remember and there's a scope mount covering it right now

Yes, the M1 carbine is much lighter then the M14, the carbine also fires a less powerful round. Frankly, if you are happy with the performance of the carbine round, I'd leave the big lump at home too.
However, if you are having to pass-up too many shots because of the range limitation, or have been unhappy with the lethality of the .30 Carbine, and still want a semi-auto, you're going to have to pay a weight penalty.
Have you consided a bolt or lever action rifle? Even the .30-30 offers a serious improvement over .30 Carbine ballistics.
