Hey guys,
sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but I bought a cleaning kit and then I bought some good hopps solvent and gun slick arosol lub. The kit came with brass jags, what are they, i thought the little plastic piece with the slit in it was for the patches. HELP!
Tks guys and girls

Two different ways of doing the same thing.

I prefer the jags to keep the rod more centered and give a more even fit all the way around. The slit ones are ok for a quick swab of oil at the end or that kind of thing but a properly fitted patch and jag work better for serious cleaning in my opinion.

Some jags you can wrap a patch around, others you poke them in the centre of patch and have at 'er, I believe they do a more even(thorough)job, then the slitted ends you mentioned.

Exactly as the previous chaps stated. The slotted end is more for applying oil, solvent, etc to the barrel. The jag fits more tightly and is the business end where the real cleaning and scrubbing takes place.

Jags date right back to muzzleloader cleaning, when there were no slotted-end fittings. One of those things that just work well and if it ain't broke, don't fix it! As the guys above stated - they give a more consistent cleaning since they fit so tightly.
