This is my first go at loading straight wall cartridges. I’m using a Lee carbide sizer on a single stage press. Every 5th case I size comes out of the die with some brass shavings inside the case. The brass is mixed headstamps. There’s no visible scratches or damage to the brass. This can’t be normal?

I can tell you that I've never seen this on any of my pistol brass, but particularly 45ACP which is the easiest to reload, offering the least resistance going in to the sizing die.
Then again I use RCBS and Lyman dies for my 45ACP.

Examine the sized cases with a magnifying glass and see where on the case the brass shavings are coming from.

Do the same to the mouth of the carbide ring and inside the carbide ring and look for defects.

Is there more sizing effort with the problem cases.

You could also try lubing the cases and see if the problem disappears.

I had that happen with a Lee 45 carbide sizer. The top edge of the sizing ring was too sharp and shaved the brass on the way out.

Contact Lee for an exchange/replacement.

They will tell you to send it in (on your dime) and they will ship it back (on their dime). I made a bit of a fuss that the cost to send back a brand new die (that was no good out of the box by no fault of my own) was the difference between buying their dies and a more expensive brand in the first place.

They ended up giving me a credit for their website for the value of the cost to ship it back (I had to email them a copy of the shipping receipt).

The replacement die was good to go.
