Hi, I got a set of 3/8", and 1/2" brass pin punches at princess auto. I'm going to turn the 3/8" down for 9mm and the 1/2 down for .45 squib punches. Anyone know what a good tolerance is? I was thinking for the 9mm I'd do about 8.8 mm and for the .45 about 11 mm.

Thanks

John

"...squib punches..." As in removing improperly loaded bullets stuck in a barrel? A hunk of 5/16" brass or Al rod and a plastic mallet will do both without bothering the barrel.
"...going to turn..." You'll find most steel punches are hardened. They'd need grinding.

Haha, yep, my "steel" aka BRASS punches might very well be hardened. I'll have to use the diamond lazer blade to turn them down. No grinding here.

hehehehe ^^^^..Sorry I am d RUNK but from what i know why not just go down in size of the punch thus ridding yourself the problem of having to turn down the punches. I use an old cleaning rod for punching out squibs and they are aluminum and less than 1/4"...just my drunken toughts..Unless you really want to do some lathe work....HEY maybe I could get you to turn something for me...??

Have to turn them down the punch part is short and the handle part is long, need to make the puch part at least 5" to fit the barrel. + I want to play with my friends lathe.

"...So does the ability to read!..." So you think I should have noticed the 'brass' part?
"...I want to play with my friends lathe..." That's different. Get some brass bar stock(there's a Metal Supermarket at 2900 Sheffield Road, Unit 1. 613-747-7511) and turn some custom 'anti-squib' punches with knurled handles. Or make a flash hider out of mild steel and cold blue it. Brass takes cold bluing well too.
