I have tried this in the sporting rifle sections with not a response, so I will give it a go here...

I notice many brass strikes on my windage turret of my scope on my Mini 14 Target..
I am aware of the propensity of these rifles to expel their casings at a large distance, but I thought the later models were equipped with a deflector type set up to prevent them striking the scope...Really what is the point of a 2pc mount/base system when the casings strike the scope?

I have relatively cheap optics on there now(BSA .223 Sweet), but was looking to up grade, But I will not do so until I can prevent the brass ejections from striking my scope(or at least the windage turret)

I have heard of rotating the scope 90* but this does little for mil-dot scopes and weaver integral bases (both a part of my intended optics), I will likely be using a one piece weaver rail for my next optic, once my retailer confirms they can supply it (they know it exist, and it it part of regular delivery...but dont have a # to order it..??)

I am looking for some advice or a easy deflector or brass catcher that fits the mini 14 target and will save my optics (which for the most part are worth more than the rifle) or advice on bushings for the gas port(where to get/size ect) to change the trajectory of the casings...

thx

Not a total solution here as the optics I want to go to have are integrated with a weaver base...there are no rings to rotate the scope on...It is all one piece
--It will work ok in the interm, but until I find the right gas port bushing or a adequate deflector...I cannot afix the optics I would like to use.

I just checked Brownells to see if there is a commercial brass deflector available, and there is for the ARs, but I don't see anything for a Mini-14. Still the commercial AR deflector looks simple enough, one would just have to get inventive and make one out of sheet metal or plastic and figure out a way to mount it to the Ruger. Perhaps a scope ring could be modified, so a deflector could be attached.

Well that was somewhat unexpected..Ruger offered to send me a no charge scope protector...likely some neoprene tape and some instructions to turn my scope 90degrees...but what the heck--I will try anything once...assuming it comes.
