Brass vs Metal

Hey all!

Just started shooting my first ever handgun, chambered in 9mm.
Buying ammo I've found that I can get brass or metal jacketed ammo for about the same price. Would there be any reason to buy the metal jacket ammo if it's the same price as the brass?

I was under the impression that you could reload brass and not metal so I thought that would be the deciding factor.

Thanks!

Are you talking about brand new brass or once fired? Once fired brass sells for $30 per 1000 in the equipment exchange section. As for factory ammunition, it's roughly $300 per 1000 at my local gun store.

Either your ammo price is crazy cheap or your brass price is quite expensive. Hope that help.

Nangisan,

i think you have brass confused with bullets.

The "full metal jacket" ammunition means that the bullet of the ammunition is jacketed with metal.

Brass is reffered to as the shell which holds the primer, powder and bullet, and is bought seperately by shooters who reload their ammo themselves. If you buy "brass", you'd still have to buy primers, bullets, etc.

as for the price, Antoine22 is right.

Sorry, didn't realize how unclear my question was.

I'm just buying 9mm ammunition by the box. Not reloading at the moment but planning to in the future.

At my local gun shops it costs about $14 for a box of 50 9mm rounds. There are a couple options, the main ones being brass cased or steel cased ammo. I was mainly wondering if there was any good reason to shoot the steel cased ammo when it's the same prices as the brass equivalent?

Thanks again

someone correct me if i'm wrong, this is an educated guess

In my head brass is better because it is a less dense metal than steel. Which means the stress of each shot is better absorbed by the brass ammo, which is a synonym of less stress on your pistol, making your gun last longer.

Makes sense?

Brass has value afterwards, save it, you may want to reload it later, or sell/trade it, empty steel cases have no value. Buy the brass cased ammo and save your empties!

Blazer was one brand and I think there were a couple others. But they weren't any cheaper than the brass variety so I didn't know if there was any reason to shoot them.

Density has no correlation between ductility and malleability (ability to deform under tensile and compressive stress respectively) and brass has a higher density than steel. Stress is force per unit area regardless of material strength.

There is no significant difference in service life between using brass-cased ammunition and that made of other metals. All the case has to do is seal the breech once.

The only practical difference is that brass is the best material if you want reloadable cases. All things being equal, I would buy the brass-cased ammo and save it for reloading or for credit to a commercial reloader.

i may have used density in the wrong way, but yeah, i did mean malleability. I have to admit i was sure the 2 were related.

thanks for correcting me, good to know.

Commercial brass cases are reloadable. Steel cases are not. Neither is CCI Blazer with Al cases.
"...brass is better because it is a less dense metal than steel..." Density has nothing to do with it. Brass is elastic. Steel is not.
