hi all, getting into rifle reloading to feed the AR, i've come across a few pcs of brass that wont fit over the pilot, specifically the neck, not alot but enough that i'm wondering if its something im doing wrong or not doing? these are 556 cases, hasnt happenned with any 223, yet lol

Military brass is usually crimped and the crimp does not necessarily all blow out when fired. You can scrap the cases or you can remove the crimp by just giving the case mouth a little flare with a tapered punch. Just push it in as far as it will go by hand and then work it around in a circle.....same as when you drill a hole and then need it just a touch bigger but are too lazy to get the right sized bit (this analogy is from my own personal play book)

are you full length sizing or using a collet die? you need the expander mandrel type dies so the inside diameter of the neck is the right size on all the brass to fit over the pilot, neck sizing brass will be all over the map between headstamps as the neck thickness is different from manufacturer to manufacturer

I run into the same problem because I buy a lot of once fired Lake City brass and its a brass spring back issue.

You have two choices.

1. Remove the pilot and chuck it in a drill and sand/polish down the pilot diameter. A binding pilot will pickup brass and reducing its diameter will prevent Galling the insides of the case neck. The pilot needs to be a smaller diameter than the dies expander. ;)

2. Buy the WFT Trimmer for speed.
