Good day fellas
This morning was feeling a bit bored and since i have been cleaning some 30.06 brass lately i decided to weight 5 cases of each manufacturer and and see how consistent they are.
Some of the results surprised me regarding consistency, mind you, all 5 brass cases were picked randomly.
Here are the results.

RP head stamp

194.70.....for an average of 194.29gr

Imperial head stamp
185.95gr

192.85.....average 190.59gr some of the brass ad almost 10gr of variation, to much in my view.

Hornady head stamp

174.30.....average 174.30 even tough the lightest of the bunch was one of the most consistent weight wise with only 1.55gr difference.

Nosler head stamp

199.10....average 199.63 the heaviest of the bunch and the most consistent with only 1gr of deviation.

Winchester head stamp

187.30.....average of 186.16gr

Browning head stamp (Norma manufactured)

200.10.....average of 198.54 second heaviest brass but not as consistent as the Nosler.

I think that from this simple test the Nosler is the best product, even though one of the most expensive ones but still probably the best, Hornady also surprised me with it's consistency, the lowest score for me goes to Imperial and it really surprised me, was hoping that it would be much better that the Wins, RP's and Hornady's.
 
Results are about what I would expect. The Imperial brass was good brass years ago until daddy Turdo owned the company then quality went down hill. If I weigh my brass I pick a brand and sort by plus or minus 0.5 grain and use the rest for cast bullets. Seems to work for me.
 
Brass from a given manufacturer will vary in average weight from lot to lot. By sorting by headstamp, your sample probably included brass from various lots.

What would be more useful is sample handfuls from the same lot number, from various makers. We would be interested in the average weight and the extreme spread in weight.

I generally prefer a light case with low ES. Then I sort by weight. Either by full grain or half grain, depending how may I have.
 
I also was surprised when reloading once fired brass for a friend. The Hornady brass was very concentric and weighed out very close. The other 20 Winchester brass and Federal brass was just thrown away. I explained to him the importance of Unison brass, and accuracy.
Is Savage Axis is a shooter. Who would have thought it starts with the brass. Good post
 
50 years ago when weighing brass was written up in a gun magazine, two boxes of Dominion was weighed.
Box 1 weighed 186 to 203.
Box 2 weighed 183 to 206.
Some place in the middle I kept 20.

Two boxes of Norma brass in 6 mm Remington. Box one had a 1.1 grain variation. Box 2 from the same lot varied 0.8 grains and fit within the previous 1.1.

Lake City Match brass is as good as any match brass. Their run of the mill brass is OK but not as OK as Lapua or Norma.

I have H20 sorted a fair bit of brass,I have found weight does not always matter compared to volume.Nosler brass is weight sorted at factory.
Lapua brass has bin the best I have found for case capacity,usally about .6 of a gr. difference in capacity per lot.
