Questions for the knowledgable:
A) Will any barrel from a "modern" rifle fit the threads of this action? If so what model/calibers.
B) Do any modern barrels have enough metal to recut threads to fit. If so what model/calibers.

Thanks.

Unless your barrel is severely shot out I would leave it alone.

If you have a Model 1908, the original caliber was 7x57mm Mauser and some rifles were factory converted to .30-06.

A good gunsmith should be able to take an appropriate barrel blank and thread it to fit your action if need be. Keep in mind that the feeding geometry of the internal magazine will function best with the original cartridge it was designed for without modifications.

Once again, if your rifle is in good shape I would leave it alone. If it has already been bubba'd and the barrel is shot then you have one of the best Mauser actions to make a custom rifle with (but it won't be cheap.)

Good luck!

P.S. if it is in good shape and you want to get rid of it let me know!:D

I agree you wont build a more accurate rifle then that 7x57 mauser. (unless something is grossly wrong with the bore.

Throw some 175 grain bullets down it off a rest before you rebarrel it.

The stock has been ruined and I am looking at selling the barreled action --- but if it does not sell I'm going to look at rebarreling. It is in 8mm (according to the verifier, I have not used the action). I was thinking of maybe a 6.5X55???

A. Yes and no. Not just any barrel. Just one that has the right thread or has been machined with the right thread.
B. Some do, but like MapleSugar says any good smithy can thread you a barrel from a blank.
Brazilian Mauser came in 7mm Mauser, not 8mm Mauser.

I picked up the same thing a while ago, a 1908 in 7x57. The reason I acquired it, primarily becasue of the quality of the action, was to use as the basis for a project gun in 7x57. This one is in pretty nice shape. The wood work has a few dings/dents but the metal work is mint and the action is still in the original 'white'. In addition, it still has what appeares to be the original sling & sling attachments.
Because of the reaction I got from some for even thinking of 'cutting' it, I've held off so far. Tried some handloads out of it the other day and it seemed to shoot not to bad considering I found the sights a little hard to see, with 'these eyes'.

Brazilian Mauser

You guys got me woundering just what I ahve. It is marked Mg.30M954 but it is not a 30-06 as the 06 case will not chamber nor will a 7X57 case, but a 308 does.

so I will have to rethink what I am going to do. Thanks for the discussion.

Nobody has specified exactly what model it is.
If it is an M954 then it would be.30/'06.
A stupid question if I may. Where would you find a number like the one you quoted, M954? I see a Mod. 1908 on the right side of the front of the action, a four digit serial # and on the crest, 15 de Novembro de 1889.

if you want a 6.5 get a swede mauser, no more cost effective way. Plus the bolt head for a 7x57/8mm or 30-06 is the wrong size.

The markings Mg.30M954 are on the left side of the chamber area below the chrest.

I was wrong, it is a 30-06. I tried a fired case and it would not let the bolt close. So I tried a new case and it closed. Sorry for all the confusion on my part. Thanks for all the input.

There is such a thing as a Mexican Mauser Model 1954. It's a small ring Mauser 98 that was chambered in 30-06. The cocking piece is similar to the 1903 Springfield.

Pictures of your rifle would be good!
