I want a non-CO2 powered .22 pellet gun to carry with me while I grouse hunt. (Yes, this is legal in NB so long as the velocity is less than 500fps)

I don't want it to be huge either. I know I won't find something that is exactly compact, but I don't want the barrel scraping the ground as I walk either. :p

Any suggestions, thoughts, recommendations?

I guess it doesn't have to be a break-barrel gun, I just figured they'd be smaller than a pump.

Thanks!

Check out crosman 2289, multi-pump, 22cal. With a Flat-Top piston, and a steel breech, you can reduce the 14" barrel length, (don't forget to crown the barrel) keeping things under the magic 500fps. Very versitile set-up, lots of info on the CanadianAirGun site. Cheers.

I own a Webley Tempest in .177, think they made them in .22 back in the day. Really robust pistol, compact, spring piston, etc. They also made a longer (less ideal?) model called a Hurricane, think an old buddy of mine might still have one in .22. The Temptest would probably suit you better.

Webley also now make a pistol called an "Alecto"

These are physically large pistols, and while technically "pump-up", full power can be achieved in 3 pumps. They're pretty popular from what I understand, and unlike allot of .22 pistols, they apparently shoot pretty close to the 500fps limit, as opposed to well under that~more typical situation with air pistols in Canada.

A fellow used an Alecto at a Field Target fun shoot last weekend and help up pretty well against the non-PAL break barrel rifles. The gun also chrono'd in the high 400s with three pumps. Everyone was pretty impressed.

Two years ago I bought a Beeman break barrel .22 at Canadian Tire.

Under 500 fps, nice fit and finish, all steel construction, sights with optic fiber inserts easy to see, good trigger. You cant miss.

I think I paid less than $150.

Pistol?

My suggestion would be to track down a 1322 and have a go through it. The 2289 is essentially the same, a direct descendant of the 1322, anyway, with some parts interchange, and fewer plastic bits.

1322s are great pistols (I have a 1377, the .177cal. version) except for the fact that 10 pumps is required for maximum velocity, they are VERY muzzle heavy and have crappy sights. With tons of practice, you can get used to the sights, they are VERY solid guns for the money. Being a pump-up pneumatic, they go off with a real "crack" sound compared to spring guns. I threw a 1399 skeletal plastic stock on mine to make it carbine-ish. Helps accuracy allot.

I would think head shots only. I know my dog has flushed the same grouse twice after it carried on with only one shotgun pellet in it. Without the dog I would never have found it, 25 foot up a tree a good ways away from the initial shot.

Not trying to be righteous, just mentioning like, but ya probably only intend head shots anyway.

Personal experience - I have the HW 45 which is pretty powerful for a .22 spring gun and made like a swiss watch. I like it a lot and it is very accurate! .... HOWEVER for GREAT value .. get the 1322 ... or HB22. Or - if you can keep it warm - look at an EB22

I am VERY impressed with the 1322 Crossman and do not think a person with an HW45 has any great field advantage to brag about fwiw.

I have a Tempest in .177 I may part with .caliber choice is a mute point with headshots. You will just lose chickens with body shots.I've had them fly 50 yards with a predator through the body in .22 from a 750fps HW80 then fold up dead.I try for back or through both shoulder to plant them right where they are standing........JMO..Harold
