Good evening Gents,
I lost my keys a few month ago and the triger lock key was attached and ive been procrastinating bringing it to a Gunsmith or a locksmith.. is it something I can do myself? I was thinking of drilling through the keywhole but i m scared it might jam it and then I'm really screwed.

In case your wondering its a s&w 659 :)

Search Youtube for trigger lock picking. It's brain dead easy. I taught my 13 year old son how to pick it. It requires a very small, flat head screw driver. It takes 20 seconds or less.

Have a look at ht tp://download.security.org/gunlock_2007.pdf . It describes how 11 year olds can defeat trigger locks, with videos. Now you just need an 11 year old and you're all set!

If you are unable to pick it or other wise open it, just get a 1/4" bit and drill it most of the way through, then start sizing up until the pins are removed and the lock opens. The steel is fairly soft.

Just be sure to keep the drill straight so you don't damage your firearm. I've had to open a 3 of them this way for my Dad's guns as he had misplaced the keys for many years.

My 8 year old can pick one od these in less than 20 seconds.... no need to drill anything.

All of my firearms are in a locked room, in locked cabinets, and disabled by bolt removal, or similar.

However, the best child safety and security is knowledge and information, I believe we as firearms owners have a responsibility to teach our children.

Trigger locks only seem to keep out adults.

In my world, they are only used for compliance with transport regs. They have no security value past the 20 seconds they take to pick.

They are not as easy to pick if they are installed correctly and tight... but they are pick-able and you need to be careful not to mark up the trigger guard in doing so. What you need to do is study a trigger lock out of a firearm... pick it and understand what you need to do...

Even when tightened down quite firmly like I like to do they are easy to disable. It merely requires the use if a thin and tough swiss army keychain blade instead of a slim round jeweler's screwdriver.

After picking at it for 20min I went into my garage and drilled it, took about 15sec. Only problem is all the metal dust. I'm due for a complete strip and Wash. I miss the smell of
Hopper #9 :) thx for all your input.

Inserting a screwdriver along the perpendicular to the pawled lock bar and lifting it off the notched locking post this way will leave a mark on the trigger guard. If you pick the tumbler one pin at a time using a piece of steel wire you don't even need a torsion bar. Use your screwdriver for that purpose instead. The locks are so cheap they normally only have three or four pins to pick, so it's good practise/learning for if you ever need to pick a real lock.

If it's your own gun, just shoot the lock off. That works in the movies. The problem is when _all_ your guns are locked. How do you shoot the lock off the first one?

Two pair of channel lock pliers turning in different directions easy peasy! Discovered on a cutline after my partner found out he left his keys at home

i dont use trigger locks for a reason a pad lock with a thick enough shackle its legal and it works of corse theres nothing saying you have to trasport non restricted with a trigger lock of any sort and storage its pick one i normaly use my safe but theres a few that will not fit
