Hi All,

Just picked up my GSG 1911 .22 and haven’t shot it yet. Have been told it’s better to break in a semi with a higher grain ammo to get the slide spring really recoiling.

Can anyone recommend or have thoughts?

Thanks all

There's no need to use any particular type of ammo to break in your GSG. Load it up with your favourite standard or high velocity ammo and have fun.

Break in is a frustrating time. There will be plenty of FTF, FTE, but persevere. It's a great gun once broken in. Also avoid the almost inescapable temptation to speed the break in by filing or sanding. Just ammo, bricks and bricks of high velocity ammo.

A few hundred rounds of HV to get things settled in, minimags are what mine liked, absolutely hated anything winchester. Also, you may have to go in and scrub the excess finish out of the frame and slide rails, and check your barrel bushing.

Mine after about 1000 rounds and multiple cleanings still does not like some ammo’s. Win Wildcats are especially crappy. S&B standard velocity’s are somewhat better. I have been trying to find some ammo that this gun likes. So far Win M&P promotional ammo is the best

Like The_Shmoo reported, CCI minimags are frequently reported as a favourite for the GSG 1911s. Back a few years ago, Tenda had a Black Friday sale on Federal Black Pack bulk 22LR. Several CGN'rs figured out that this Federal bulk ammo was re-branded CCI mini-mags. I didn't hesitate - I bought it cheap and stacked it deep. This is the only ammo I run through my GSG 1911, and I'm satisfied with it.

Those were "the good old days" back in 2019, when ammo prices were cheap and none of us bought nearly enough! That Federal bulk (CCI mini-mag) ammo was $239.99..... for 4,800 rounds. I miss those days!

I don't know about the GSG 1911, but I did a post about my GSG Firefly about the first time I had it out to the range (https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2327117-GSG-Firefly). I ran a whole pile of assorted ammo and it was utterly reliable

All in all, a very reliable pistol. I was surprised it chewed through damn near everything I tossed at it. Good news is, it appears I can stock up on whatever I find in stock and on sale!

It's probably fine with anything marked "high velocity", but if you want to be on the safe side then CCI MiniMags are the way to go. 36grHP or 40grRN both should work. Once it's broken in, then you can start experimenting with different types of ammunition to see if it has any preferences (reliability or accuracy).

I put a ztrs firing pin in mine and now it chews through everything without issue. Prior to that I would have several ftf during a range session with winchester and federal being no gos

I run mine pretty wet and did so from the start and have had no issues with it other than wearing parts out. It has well over 10.000 rounds through it. Do yourself a favour and get a parts kit or two for it.
