Just bought a new Savage .22lr BTVS with a 3-9X32 Bushnell scope. Beautiful gun for a first time owner, but before I put even a single round through it, I want to here some opinions on 'conditioning' or 'breaking in' the new barrel. Thoughts?

Centerfire rifles need breaking-in. Rimfire, perhaps not so much. Centerfire guys fire a shot, clean, fire a shot, clean, for 10 shots or something. Then repeat with five shot cycles. Then with 10 shot cycles, something like that. With a rimfire, it's tougher to tell if it's even beneficial. They say you can try the same routine, but lengthening the cycles right of the bat, cleaning every 25-50 shots instead. Wouldn't hurt to do so, but I don't think it's going to be the end of the world if you don't. I'd just be sure to give it a good cleaning before you go shoot it, get all the shipping gunk out.

Give it a real good cleaning before you take it out. Shoot it and clean after 20 rounds or so and that should be good. I clean my .17 after every 50 rounds or so ususally.

Usually it takes about 400 rounds or so for a .17 to obtain optimum accuracy.

I'm with Cz452. A good pre-shoot cleaning to remove factory and packing gunk. Don't overlube after cleaning.

Then a thorough barrel cleaning every 50 rounds, for the first 500. Always from the breech end; never from the muzzle.

Clean when function or accuracy is a problem after that.
