So a while ago I picked an old and somewhat neglected Mossberg 51m. Since the weather hasn't been all that great the last few days, I figured it was a good time to help this old girl out. First was a full strip. It was pretty mucky in there. I disassembled the whole thing and gave it a real good cleaning and lubing. I was surprised how good everything looked under the dirt and grime. Next came the stock. I removed the 3 layers of varnish (complete with runs and scratches) and found some pretty nice wood underneath. I gave it a light scuffing to remove any little sharp edges and then gave her 4 coats of blo. After following that up with three coats of clear gunstock wax, it feels very nice in my hands. I forgot to take any before pictures and I missed my chance at a couple of photos in the beginning, but you get the idea. I also included a Mossberg family photo for your enjoyment. Now to get the old girl to the range and see how she shoots.

Nice job. Made me think of doing one of mine . Mine has some rust and bluing missing on the stock joint metal , I'm thinking of painting it . Any advice ?

I love refurbishing old mossbergs, they generally come up very nice.I can't do metalwork but sanding and refinishing the hardwood stocks results in a good shooter, accurate ,solid. My rule now is to buy nothing younger than I am....69 and one day these old mossbergs will be passed on to my grandchildren as I'm paying it forward just like the old guy who sold me his Nylon 66 for $10 on one condition-that I shoot it

Nice family of Mossbergs there, I have a 46MB and 151MB too, very good rifles. If you need parts, I have a box of NOS Mossberg parts, any specifics, let me know. I have firing pins, assorted screws, rear sights.
