Brenneke slugs or Sabot slugs?

Hey guys, This summer is coming up, and I will be doing alot of camping. As usual I will have my shotgun with me for bear defense. My barrel is a 14" smoothbore. Can you shot sabot slugs from it with any type of accuracy at 50 yards? Or would you guys use those brenneke slugs? I need a good slug that offers good penetration. I don't think the plain lead rifled slugs will cut it. What do you guys think?
 
Since you have a smooth bore I would highly recommend the Brenneke's over sabots. Make sure you check your point of impact with slug you choose before you rely on it to save your hide.
 
Brenneke or foster are better for smooth bore. If there are no sights on your gun, a 50yard shot is long with just a bead sight. Tough to justify self defence at 50 yards too.
 
SABOT slugs require rifling to properly stabilise. If you have a smoothbore accuract will be poor and the slugs will keyhole. Not dangerous to the gun, but you will be better served by cheaper slugs made for smoothbores.
 
Thanks guys. I shot some saboted slugs out of my mossy 500 when i had it, and it was a smoothbore as well. It did ok to 40 yds. I am basically looking for a slug with a little more penetration than the plain lead ones ( I have seen pics where they completely flatten out. Is there any kind of slug that is not saboted, but still has a fairly thick copper jacket to avoid pancaking (besides brennekes)?
 
What kind of bears are you likely to encounter, if blacks, big penetration is not hard to come by, bones are not that heavy. In a true life or death head on encounrer, SSG might be better. Just keep pumping away at the bear's head. While you will likely kill it with the first shot, blowing away the eyes, ears, and nose will make it awful hard for the bear to find you.

A lady I know ran into a bear while bird hunting with her boyfriend. She was terrified of the idea of being eaten by a bear, so he had instructed her to empty her 12 ga at the bear's head if the situation arose. He got her to load her pump with two #6's, followed by an SSG. When the inevitable close encounter happened at a distance of about 15 feet, she stopped shooting after the first two shots as there was no more head to shoot at. The bear was a medium sized boar.

The lady also happens to be a championship class trap shooter, so the patterns were nicely centred!
 
I have tested Lyman sabot slugs fairly extensivliy, in 12 gage. These 1 1/4 slugs don't require a rifled barrel at all. They are very accurate and when cast of quenched wheel weights, penetrate over twice as many dry phone books as my brenneke's did.

They also fit well in 2 3/4 cases. In my tests forester type slugs penetrate the least. I havent tried any of the so called sabot slugs that use a jacketed bullet in the sabot.

I don't think the bear is going to tell the conservation officer that it was 50 yards.
 
SSG is 000 Buck is it not? Or is SSG the abbreviation used to distinguish birdshot to buckshot. I have a few Imperial SSG shells.
Still does'nt tell what it stands for?

i think SSG is 000buck and 00 buck is SG or so i read somewhere. what SSG stands for i haven't a clue. HeHe. there must be somebody out there 85 years old who can tell us. i'm a gunsmith, asked a lotta people the same question. all i ever got was a look. buck shot really hasn't been used for deer hunting in this part of ontario for a long,long time, to any great extent,at least not like it used to be used.
