I bought one of those Lee hardness test kits.

Here are a few different materials that I tested just for reference if anyone is interested. The first number is the measurement on the optical tester scale. The second is the Brinell hardness as per the chart that came with the hardness tester. All materials that I tested were unprocessed scrap metal straight from the scrap yard. I just filed a flat spot on everything for the tests.

Standard lead wheel weight - 6.2 = 13.4 BHN
Lead acid batter terminals - 6.2 = 13.4 BHN
Radioactive isotope container - 7.0 = 10.4 BHN
Lead fishing sinkers - 7.0 = 10.4 BHN
37% lead 63% tin bar solder - 7.8 = 8.2 BHN

Honourable mention
Zinc wheel weight - 2.8 = ??? Numbers didn't go that low on the chart...lets just say it's a lot harder than lead.

I find this very interesting. For many years I have mixed 20 lbs of wheel weights 20 of linotype and a bar of 50/50 solder. Most of it went out the end of a .44 mag rifle and ruger pistol. One thing I now for sure, it did'nt expand.
