Hi gents,

I'm looking to buy a rangefinder in the US and bring it across the border myself. I can't determine if a laser rangefinder is ITAR controlled. I would appreciate any help.

Cheers,

mik

Range finders can also be used for golf and other activities requiring a distance estimate. They are not a firearm or ammunition and as such should be just fine.

I have one on it's way from California to me. It's a class 1 laser product and is regulated by DOT. I don't think it can be shipped air. Mine is coming via USPS. I'll let you know if it makes it across the line at customs. Fingers crossed it al works out!

There are two parts to the question of whether it can cross the border: I. Does the U.S.A. allow it to be exported? and II. Does Canada allow it to be imported? If you can find a Canadian retailer selling it that effectively answers both with Yes. But it might be subject to export controls that require permission from U.S. authorities to export it and that permit may or may not be available to a foreign visitor picking one up at a lower U.S. retail price and taking it home.

Take the trouble to find out for sure from the U.S. authorities. If it's not allowed, getting caught on your way out will be more trouble and expense than buying one in Canada for a higher price.

Also depends on which range finder it is.

Yup.

A good test is to go to Optics Planet .com and try and "buy" the one you want. Their site will tell you immediately if it is restricted from export. From what I recall, any glass with a reticle is ITAR.

Some rangefinders might be considered "SME" - Significant Military Equipment.
If purchased from an experienced exporter, there shouldn't be a problem.
Do it yourself, hand carried? Best to confirm that the thing isn't subject to export restrictions.

Thanks gents. It's a Sig Sauer Kilo 2200 LRH. I was going to buy it from Cabelas. They will ship it to Canada, I would just save $100USD in duties and shipping if I brought it over myself. I checked a few sites and MidwayUSA shows its a DOT regulated item so I'm just going scrap my idea. Thanks for all the replies.

If I'm not mistaken, dot regulations aren't a big deal. It's itar you need to be worried about.

I just ordered one from the Canadian Cabela's website, and I should have it next week.

Why not just order it here? It's backordered at the moment but the Black Friday pricing is still in effect.

Back when there were no Sig 2000's in Canada I got mine from the US no problem at all having it shipped, and through all the proper channels, marked as what it was and actual value.

They had it on sale for $350USD, it's now back to $500. Even if I shipped it to Canada it would have been $130 cheaper than buying it from cabelas.ca.
