Hi all,
I just returned from a local gun show and met a personal acquaintance. He maintains that there is no problem bringing ammo back when on a shopping trip to the US. Says he does it all the time.
When asked if he's bringing back food, booze or firearms...he declares 'no'.

In any case, is it legal to bring back ammo or do you have to jump through the 'get an export permit' .... 'get an import permit'....'get a customs broker'.....'get ok from CFO' ordeal?

What has been your experience?

Your friend is violating US federal arms control law every time he does this.
So far, he hasn't been caught on the US side.
The first time he is, he will have a very different story to tell.
He won't have to worry about cross border shopping any more - he'll be barred entry to the US.
Apart from violating US export controls, it is an offence for a non-resident alien to be in possession of ammunition in the US, unless he has the necessary permissions.

On a side note, the US performs random check on vehicles leaving the country. I have been checked by them a few times coming back into Canada. Of course I know the laws and have never bought any ammo or anything else I am not suppose to.

It's OK as long as it's 223 ammo for deer hunting.

We'll save tremendous bandwidth if we start combining these weekly topics....:yingyang:

Sure , bring as much as you like and make it worth your while since you're going to be Babba's ##### for a few months.

You cannot bring back one single bullet, case, hull, primer or loaded cartridge from the US legally without the proper export permits. As a Canadian (I presume) you cannot get the export permits/license. This is all US ITAR regulations, not Canadian rules.

People that say they got away with it are like people that say they got away with drinking and driving so they'll keep doing it.

It's fine until you get caught. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

How many years would you like to be banned from entering the US? Minimum answer is 5 years!!

And entering also includes overflying US airspace, even if you don't land in the US. It means if you want to go to Mexico, Caribbean, or South America, you have to go via Europe, or Asia.

I gave it a try last month in maine and no dice. Anywhere I went you neede an ID proving you were a resident of maine or a US citizen. I had called atf in the US and they said I would need to get a propper permit to bring ammo legaly over the border. He also said off the record they are pretty much denied anyway. The prices were not that much cheaper thann buying here anyway.

I have been tempted a couple of times, but could not get a straight answer from anyone down there. The gun shop guys were happy to sell me the ammo but said I was on my own getting across the boarder. I figued if fireworks are not allowed ammo must not be either, too bad!

don't

I've brought ammo from US to Canada a couple times, when I was asked at the boarder I declared what I had on me and had no problems. The agent didn't even ask me for my PAL, I guess they had a record of it when my passport got scanned. The RCMP website says that we can bring back up to 5000 rounds without a special permit.

I personally know of 2 incidents in the US where people I have met told me their story of buying ammo.

1 fellow was in Washington at a gun show...... (US homeland security often keeps an eye on parking lots looking for suspicious activity). Canadian liscence places fit that concern

Anyway, the guy bought a couple boxes of vintage ammo, thought nothing of it , because it is legal to bring into Canada through customs.........

BUT

Ammo is not legal to possess in the US if you are not a US citizen.

Long story short...... Just as the guy was returning to Canada, but still in the US, a special team of US Marshals , stopped his car, searched it, trashed his car, found the ammo...... Tossed him in jail for a day ......
He ended up paying a big fine and is now banned from returning to the US for 5 years.

The other story is similar .... but I;ll keep this short.

My advice...... Yeah, might cost more here in Canada...... but just buy it here.

The US anti terrorist guys mean business and every bust they make (no matter how trivial we might think it is) go to stats, which make them appear to be doing their jobs..... go figure

my 2 cents

Lucky
