Not sure if this has been posted before, but I read today somewhere, that Britain will purchase new G17s to replace the L9's. I'm 100% in agreement, and was wondering what others think on the G17 as a Service Pistol, I believe it's a superb sidearm, and would fill the role perfectly.
Would the G17 be our best replacement for our HP's as well in the CF? I think so.

The best replacement for our Hi Powers would be new Hi Powers. We barely have enough money to buy ammo, let alone buy new guns and the logistics that go with them.

Step in the right direction. Glocks have cheaper parts, can shoot hotter ammo and higher round counts. I thought that the British were using the P226 or P228, or was that the SAS?

I read in the same article they were issuing some P226's already in inventory as a stop gap measure to troops in Afghanistan, but the Glock will be phased in overtime throughout the British Forces.

That would be the best solution logistically. from a logical and practical standpoint glocks would be the smarter choice.

Glock is the way to go

Cheap
easy to service
easy to train on
Reliable
mags are fantastic
can take soldier abuse
stupid proof

SIG is for pro's, Glock is for everyone

I know that our government has its head up its ass in regard to selling off old surplus arms to its qualified citizens, but has anyone inquired as to the possibility of Canadians legally importing surplus British forces handguns?

New Hi-Powers cheaper than new Glocks?

Introducing a new model of pistol entails retraining users and supporting technicians, new tools and manuals for the latter, new manuals and perhaps the development of some ancilliary equipment for the former (e.g. holsters). Just replacing the Hi-Powers with new Hi-Powers would leave everything else in place and that might be cheaper overall.

Big Picture: getting the best possible pistol is certainly nice, but having a pistol that is good enough may be good enough if it saves you money that spend on getting the best something else that actually does you even more good than the difference in performance between those two pistol options.

Good enough gets people dead, and that's absolutely not a f*cking option in my opinion. Spend the money on the proper tools and proper training and it will pay off ten fold. The training to run a Glock is far less than the training for a hi power. For those who are already trained(I use the term loosely as most in the MIL get very little time on a handgun) its simple. Insert magazine, cycle slide, shoot, repeat as necessary. For those who haven't been trained yet, its exactly the same. Holsters in inventory are crap, so changing platforms and subsequently holsters would only be a benefit.

There is an argument to replacing the Hi-Powers with Glocks as stated by some. The reality here is that the UK is in serious financial difficulty. The UK Ministry of Defence are currently setting world records for over-spending, mismanagement, and flagrant incompetence. In comparison they are currently making the Pentagon look like a bunch of Scottish farmers when it comes to spending.
My question would be – Has there ever been an issue with the current sidearm in that a life was lost or a soldier injured that a Glock would have prevented?

Unfortunately TDC, most militarys today settle for good enough. Are there better platforms than the AR15 and AK that are most commonly used? Definately, but everything boils down to logistics and financing.

As weight is an issue, I would prefer the G19. At a cost of roughly $265 with 5 mags for a Glock, this contract will be one cheapest to run for the MOD.

Not a Glock koolaid guy but the price makes it attractive. I personally like the Sig 2022, but any of the modern polymer pistols in 9mm will do.

Objectively Glocks make a ton of sense for the 'average' soldier or policeperson. Safe, reliable, good mag capacity and simple. Special units that train and shoot a lot might be well off with HP's, 1911's etc but lets face it those are better suited to users of high proficency who can carry in condition 1.
To me its seems like a no brainer, Glocks have all the features that a duty pistol needs. Insert mag, rack slide, holster. I have no idea why some US unit still choose 1911's. What does it offer over a full size Glock? Single action, limited capacity, needs to be well tuned to be reliable etc. If I was an LEO or soldier I would much rather have a G22/23 than any .45 1911. I think a 1911 and HP's are 'nicer' pistols to look and use but from a practcal application point of few Glocks beat 1911's and HP's hands down.

I would certainly like an Inglis HP!
