British Columbia man thwarts cougar attack with spear

What were the specs. on the spear? I think I need to get me a new spear or have a custom one built.

Actually to be serious, I wonder what kind of "spear" was used? I imagine he just grabbed for some sort of convenient weapon and went after the cat. Maybe it was a "pitch fork" or something that he "speared" the beast with.

Exactly spear could have been a pitch fork

That particular cat had been hanging around for days and had no fear of humans. It should have been shot or snared long before it started chewing on the woman.

BTW, spearing a cat that is preoccupied with it's "kill" would not be too hard.

Unfortunately the old hippies found out the hard way nature is not a Disney cartoon.

Cold Steel President Lynn C Thompson said: "This is an awesome story of courage under pressure. This loving husband gathered his nerve and nailed his life to his spine. He grabbed the boar spear and faced a cougar to protect his loved one! It doesn't get more primal than that!"

Holy metaphor mash batman!

Wonder why he chose the spear over a firearm? Convenience?

Didn't own one grabed what was on hand ie a stick that he sharpened and that was good enough. They all it a spear even though it was just a shovel handle with a slight point on it. It wasn't sharpened it just has a point were the shovel head goes on stab hard enough it will go through.

The news said it was a shovel handle that he used because it was in the shed he just grabbed what was closest and stabbed the cat...

Also with the storage laws for firearms... It wouldn't matter because the cat would of finished eating the person before the gun could be taken out and loaded...

I've a boar spear...its a very wicked weapon. The nice part is, if you spear something, it can't push up the shaft to get you. I've never done it, but I hear "hang on for dear life" is the preferred phrase :p

You should dig up a copy of "Tigrero" by Sasha Siemel... a russian who hunted jaguar in Brazil with what appears to be a modified boar spear. The technique was to bay them up with hounds, then move in and provoke a charge. He said he preferred the spear to a rifle because it allowed him to keep the cats at arms length.

P.S. The revolver he's carrying in the second photo is one of the first Smith & Wesson .357 registered magnums, 8 3/4" barrel.
